I work from 8:30 to 5:30. I have been potty traing for 3 weeks and I don't think she is catching on. I have strarted going home for lunch to take her outside and when I get there she has already destroyed my kitchen poop and pee everywhere and she tears up the pee pee pads in to little cotton balls. She sleeps in her cage at night so I don't like to lock her during the day.Today I came home for lunch and was so aggrevated so I put her outside for 20 minutes while I cleaned and then took her for a walk and I put her in her cage before I left until I get home around 5:30. Is it a bad idea to lock her in her in her cage when I go to work then take her out at lunch time and put her back in then take her out when I get home and then put her back when she has to go to sleep ONLY until she is potty trained then she can freely rome around the house? How long before she can hold her bladder? I have a Female pitbull (very Friendly).

It will help your training efforts alot by crating her while you are at work. Keep coming home for lunch to let her out and she'll be fine, and you'll both be happier.

Putting her into her crate while you are gone or she is unsupervised, like at night, is the best way to potty train. Dogs don't eliminate in the same place they sleep, so this is the best solution. Continue coming home at lunch to let her out as you have been, as this is a very long time to be gone. Also look into a dog walker or puppy visits through the day so she isn't alone for so long.

To further help, when you take her outside, always take her to the same area to eliminate. When she does it outside with you, give her treats and praise! This is very important for the learning. She shouldn't be learning that the safest way is to go whenever you aren't around. She should learn that she gets treats and love when she goes outside, with you there. If she goes inside, do not punish her - she has already forgotten about it. She will not understand why she is in trouble. If you catch her in the act of doing it inside, immediately say "Stop!" and simply take her outside. If she finishes outside, give her treats and praise. If she doesn't, just take her back in and clean up the mess.

If the dog is not in a cage, she will never learn. If you are home, she doen's need to be in a cage. The puppy doesn't understand, because you are not there when she has an accident to let her know. As soon as you come home, take her out of the cage; repeat the same words for potty. example.. "good girl potty" as soon as you put her down-she will go potty , reward immediatley with a treat. I used dog food for the treat. It works.. You don't have to spend alot of money on treats. Make sure you reward for the good behavior. ,so she knows she did well.

You should definately crate her during the day. It is not cruel to do this... you need to protect your house. For every month that she is old, expect 1 hour of being able to hold it (ie: 3 months, 3 hours). They also have puppy pad holders that have worked well from my dog (she tore the pads into pieces as well). In addition, do you leave her anything to do while your gone? Get a kong and fill it with some peanut butter or nonfat plain yogurt and freeze overnight... she sounds bored =)

I felt bad about putting my dog in a crate at night and during the day also, but it is so very important that a dog be crated while you are absent from the house so I decided to allow her out of the crate at night but in my bedroom with me, and in the crate during the day.

After a year I can now leave the door to the crate open when I leave for work and my dog stays in the crate and doesn't chew anything anymore but has access to pee pads so she can urinate when she needs to.

Are you "potty training" an 8 week old pup, or 2 year old dog?
I assume you had to pay few hundred bucks for your pit, so why not spend extra fifty and get a couple of decent books on puppy/ dog training topic?
THIS way, you will not get anywhere.

you have to be very consistent. Make sure you are getting her to go out at the same time every day to establish a routine. When she does go outside make sure you really praise her. Keep working with her and be patient.

She doesn't have the physical ability to hold it, until about 15 weeks.
