I was looking in to going to college to take up a photography course but today i found out that i cant start until next september.

Is there any other type of photography courses around that are not at college or would i just be better of building my portfolio and trying to get a carear in photography?

I have a slr cam and people say i am good at it and its something i love to do.

i feel disapointed that i missed this years college course not sure if i will still be living around here in a years time.

Try the New York Institute of Photography (nyip.com). They offer correspondence courses and have been in business since 1910.

Note: Its spelled "career" not carear

College is good. It teaches you a lot! But something like photography, you learn mostly by doing. I mean it would be good to know the history of photography, the chemistry behind it, and what Ansel Adams and Alfred Stieglitz and Minor White had to say about it, but this isn't what makes you a better photographer!

So I would say it's best to use the time shooting pictures and developing and printing them, or learning Photoshop skills.

College will teach you how photography relates to politics, culture, and the other arts, and will make you 'well rounded'. But working for a photographer, either as an assistant or even an unpaid (or low-paid) intern will teach you more useful stuff in a year than you'd learn in college in four years.

Use this time to do an internship for a reputable local photographer (one that has a real studio).
You've got a great opportunity to get some "real life" experience. Something that most people who attend a photo college don't have before they start classes

Although you might not make much money (or even any at all), you won't have to pay tuition or fees which means you get to save all that money while learning a whole lot of the practical aspects of the field.

You can also learn "on-line."

Well lets see, you can take a photo class at a local jr. college, you can check to see what your park district has to offer (tho a college course would be better and give you some pre-college experience)....

Another option is to go to Wolf Camera or Ritz. Sometimes they offer digital camera classes.

Good luck!

i went to college to study photography but learned a hell of a lot more working with a photographer as an assistant/apprentice. i found the college expected you to be able to explain why you took each picture when realistically i took pictures of things i thought looked nice/interesting!
