Please, leave it to the professionals.. you can easily do MUCH more harm than good. If you do it incorrectly you can actually infect the glands and cause the glands to rupture. So, unless you know what you are doing, leave it to those who do.

We once had a client bring in a dog with such an infected gland from "at home" anal expression there was an actual abscess (which required surgery!)!

You have a puppy suffering from impacted anal glands?

Jess and the others recommending professional assistance in this area are absolutely correct. Cleaning anal glands is a dirty, smelly process that can result in injury or infection if done incorrectly.

You're better off to have a vet or groomer show you how to do this. After they show you, you might just decided you'd rather have them do it, that stuff smells nasty.

Either have a groomer show you how to do it, or just take him to the groomer or vet and have them do it.

My suggestion is let your groomer do it. You have to take him to be groomed anyway, so just let them do it.
