…diminished?

Does the fact that atrocities have been committed in the name of other religions in the past should allow us to go to sleep concerning the current threat that is “radical” Islam?

mega_mover – the point I am trying to make is that people across the entirety of the West needs to wake up, acknowledge this threat and face it. We need to stop apologizing to and accommodating them and demand that they take care of their own problem with radicalism before we take care of it for them

I think the past is in the past and that we need to focus our attention on the threats in the here and now.

You can argue how many times christians have killed in the name of their religion, you can cite how many people were killed by atheist gvts, but they dont change the fact that the people killing right now are doing it in the name of the muslim religion.

Do I blame all muslims, no, but until the muslim community starts condemning the terrorists more and until they actually put forth a real effort to stop the terrorism, then they will have a lot to answer for. If a bunch of people in the name of christianity were constantly attacking innocent people there is no way the christian religion would be given as free a pass as the muslims are getting right now.

You're right, it doesn't diminish the atrocities that are happening right now. It is important though that we keep in mind that this is not a new occurrence in history.

We seem to have zoned in on radical Muslims and are ignoring many other things (like Darfur to name one.) We care very little for things unless it is happening to Americans. It is like this being used as a means to show our racist vengeful character that we have tried to hide for so long. (Even if you try and crunch the numbers Christians killed at least 650,000 men, women and children in the Inquisitions alone. Some estimates have put that number at over 2 million.)

Of course their atrocities as would anyone else's of a different faith are not diminished. But, until we can judge and rule and administer punishment completely blind to an individual or a groups religious beliefs and instead based on what horrible act they have committed we need to not only look at Islamics as the focus. Spirituality does not comitt crimes, people do and those people despite what they believe in from a religious standpoint need to be judged and dealt with as necessary.

i think of there are consistently going to be the honest sheep who will persist with him everywhere and not have confidence something he ought to do is incorrect. yet, i think of the events of this previous week have woken up countless human beings in accordance with what i'm listening to. unhappy isn't it? At any value, this particularly jogs my memory of the loss of life of the Nixon administration.

Of course it doesn't diminish those crimes. It merely illustrates that the actions of the "crazies" can't be used to judge the average adherent or the religion as a whole.

no they are not diminished, but radical islamists aren't the only ones committing atrocities in this world either

of course we continue our vigilance.

to bring it down to a bite size scenario....think of the women ( and men)who become so zealous for thier religion, that they cross the line into illness. they then can be convinced that "god " told them to sacrifice thier child or cut thier baby's "holy hands off" in obedience. they are absolutely convinced that what they are doing is being obedient. now...you and I know that they are sick. so ..having said that...if you notice that a religious person you know is starting to make crazy claims or indicates intent to harm....we have a responsibility to intercede immediately to avoid disaster.we wouldnt just ignore it, and wait for something awful to happen.
