I´m not very bright, and this boggled me a bit, but here goes!
The three men hand over 30, the manager gives the porter 5 to give to the men, meaning the manager is only holding 25 pound, each man gets 1 pound, add the 3 pound to the 25 the manager holds, amounts to 28 pounds, leaving the porter with 2 pounds !!
Phew don´t give us to many of these I´m not worthy!!

yeah the trick is the turnaround for the adding up by 9. Yeah, so what they paid nine? it doesn't change the fact that the porter has 2 + the three they kept bringing us to 5 and adding the room fee of 25 brings us to 30.
While it's true they only paid nine, it's irrelevant when adding up the total of the cash being handed around that particular evening.
