There are some popular mistakes above, as well as some correct answers.
God instructed Adam and Eve that they could eat freely from all trees except from one - the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
Note: not "tree of knowledge", as many people wrongly quote.

Adam and Eve had much knowledge, and the capacity to gain much more, which we have inherited.

The 'original sin' that people refer to is the disobedience of Eve and Adam in eating this fruit, when tempted by the serpent (either Satan himself, of possesed by Satan).
This event is also known as the Fall (of man).

The result of this original sin (as explained beforehand by God) was the curse. Death entered the world at this point.
The whole of creation has been effected by the fall and is now 'groaning' under the curse.

All humans are descended from Adam and Eve and have inherited their fallen nature - we cannot help sinning, and the just penalty for our sin is death.

The good news is that Jesus came to earth, and has paid the death penalty on our behalf, so all those that accept his sacrifice on their behalf will have eternal life.
The curse, death and suffering are a temporary intrusion, and will one day be removed. Death is the 'final enemy' and has been defeated by Jesus.

The original sin was in the Garden of Eden, when Adam and Eve didn't obey the word of God and ate of the forbidden fruit.
You are not at all ignorant, the fact you are asking questions about religion shows you are just curious.

The original sin was when Lucifer and 1/3 of the angels tried to usurp God's power. After the battle in heaven Lucifer and his followers were cast down to earth where disguised as a serpent he tempted Eve.

Read Romans 5:12 and on. This was not Eve's fault, as is popular wisdom. It was Adam. He brought sin into the world, and with it, death. The fact that he passed death on to all humans, means we all have that original sin. His original sin was disobedience to God.

Forgive me everyone if I get this wrong... I am what I've been told is described as a "babe" in the Bible.
But I believe the answer is when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit given to them by the serpent.

Failing to keep integrity under test.
Everyone thinks that Satan is after you soul, or your life.
If you are dead, you can not worship him, so for Satan to want to kill you or take your life away has no meaning to him.
What is more important than life itself is our Integrity to Jehovah God, even if it means loosing our life now in Satan's system of things.
Why?
Because Jehovah wants to undo all the damage caused by Satan and human imperfection and he will do so when his son Jesus Christ, rules as King and Priest over the earth for a 1,000 years.

Many would say it was when Eve ate of the fruit of the tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.
But I think it is deeper than that. Eve's action was the outgrowth of another sin: Disbelief

The original sin was adding to the Word of God.
This led to doubt and eventually disobedience -
God told Adam and Eve
Genesis 2
16And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

17But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

but Eve ADDED to the word of God:
Genesis 3
2And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

3But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

"neither shall ye touch it .....lest ye die" - of course she DID touch it and DID NOT die, so the logic was she ate -

while the first committed sin was disobedience and eating a proscribed fruit, the original sin was adding to the word of God which is why there is a terrible warning about doing it -

Revelation 22
18For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:

19And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
