I'm going to England to visit family and "be a tourist" for about a week early (March-April) next year. I've been before, but am taking my g/f who has never been out of the U.S. Seeing castles and the rich history is probably a must, but I've only got a week. Any suggestions? Willing to use trains and hostels...

robtheman-I've been there and seen it with my brother backpacking last year. I took a picture with him posing under the street sign, which seemed very appropriate, especially where he was standing.

Go to Bath. There is a neat street sign that sits at the corner of Gay Street and Queen Square. You'll know it when you see it.

You will probably fly into London, so I would definitely take the train up to Oxford for a couple of days. Wonderful and beautiful city. If you can get to it, there is a lovely hostel in Wales on Snowdon. I also really loved the southwest corner of England -- I bought a historical sites pass and visited many beautiful and interesting places. But I did have a car! However, you can see all of Oxford on foot, and the train is quite convenient.

You say England! I live in Wales - now that's loaded with History and the Castles are something else!! Do try and pop over the Welsh border, if only for a couple of days, and we'll make it worth the effort.

I highly recommend a visit to Shropshire, it is one of the best counties in the whole of the UK... beautiful scenery, castles, manor houses, a whole world of history! and many other attractions too. also including a town called 'Ludlow' which has recently been voted as a fine food capital of Great Britain. Ceratinly worth a look!

We liked Cornwall down on the tip of the country - beautiful scenery and good Cornish food.

Plus it's warmer down there.
