Global warming is one-half of the climatic cycle of warming and cooling.
The earth's mean temperature cycles around the freezing point of water.
This is a completely natural phenomenon which has been going on since there has been water on this planet. It is driven by the sun.
Our planet is currently emerging from a 'mini ice age', so is
becoming warmer and may return to the point at which Greenland is again usable as farmland (as it has been in recorded history).
As the polar ice caps decrease, the amount of fresh water mixing with oceanic water will slow and perhaps stop the thermohaline cycle (the oceanic heat 'conveyor' which, among other things, keeps the U.S. east coast warm).
When this cycle slows/stops, the planet will cool again and begin to enter another ice age.

It's been happening for millions of years.

The worrisome and brutal predictions of drastic climate effects are based on computer models, NOT CLIMATE HISTORY.
As you probably know, computer models are not the most reliable of sources, especially when used to 'predict' chaotic systems such as weather.

Global warming/cooling, AKA 'climate change':
Humans did not cause it.
Humans cannot stop it.

Dude, there are some things that are heating up the planet.
Exhaust from factories and cars and homes is part of the problem.
Also, cutting down forests is another problem. The forests helped to cool the earth, keep the earth cool, and clear the air of pollution. Just stand in a parking lot in the summer on a hot day where there used to be a forest. Whatever the temperature was when the forest used to be there, its at least 20 degrees warmer in the parking lot. Multiply this by all the thousands of paved surfaces and buildings that have replaced millions of trees and that equals a lot less cooling and a lot more heat.

All this heat is melting the glaciers and ice caps and threatening to raise the sea levels, causing greater disasters.

The snow cover helped to reflect a lot of the suns rays and heat back into space, keeping the planet cool and keeping the planet from getting too hot. But with the snow cover gone, the suns rays are allowed in and don't reflect back out. Also the gases from car and factory emissions keeps the sun's heat trapped in the earth's atmosphere. All this is causing the planet to heat up, and since we've never seen this before, we don't know how bad the disasters will get (tidal waves, hurricanes, fires, tornados, earthquakes, volcanos, calderas, etc...)

The companies are making a lot more money because of the fast growth, but their emissions and cutting down the forests are causing the disasters that end up ruining their profits. Also, the cars, planes, homes, factories, and all the consumers that help support industry and commerce are not helping the situation either. In other words, we must face the fact that we are part of the problem, so, we must also be the solution. Creating industries and commercial ventures that help the environment and help balance the environment is what is most needed at this time.

Hopefully we can find a way to end, neutralize or counterract the emissions, find something to cover the roads and buildings and bring back the forests so the earth can return to normal before global disasters destroy everthing.

That is what is up with global warming.

The incoming infrared rays of sun are of shorter wavelength and easily pass the atmosphere. Once they reach the ground a part of the ray is absorbed by the earth and the remaining is reflected back. The rays that are reflected back contain infrared rays of longer wavelength which cannot pass the atmosphere easily due to the presence of gases like carbon dioxide, methane, chlorofluorocarbons. They infrared rays that are now trapped cause the heating of the atmosphere. This process is very important for our survival on earth. It is only when excess heat is trapped that is causes harm as is seen in the melting of polar caps which has submerged many islands. If this continues there may come a day when there is no life on earth. This can be prevented by purifying the exhaust fumes emitted by vehicles and industries and adopting a nature friendly attitude.

Global warming is the generic effect of "greenhouse gasses" being put into the atmosphere. These gasses keep heat on earth better than the normal atmosphere, and earth heats up. This heat warms the seas, making ice caps melt and the sea levels rise. Some people say that because we put chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) into the air, it decays the Ozone layer and makes UV rays and heat come through more easily. I tryed to keep it consice and I hope it helps.

Some gases ("greenhouse gases") let sunlight in, which warms the Earth, and then block that heat from leaving. That's the "greenhouse effect", and it's a natural thing, mostly caused by water vapor.

Man is making excessive amounts of greenhouse gases, mostly by burning fossil fuels. That causes the delicate natural balance to go out of whack and the Earth warms. That's global warming.

It won't be a Hollywood style disaster. Gradually coastal areas will flood and agriculture will be damaged. But it will be very bad. Rich countries will cope, but it will take huge amounts of money. In poor countries many people will die of starvation, but not all of them.

Most scientists say, in 20-50 years. But we need to start right now to fix it, fixing it will take even longer than that.

It doesn't exist. Liberals are trying to make G. Bush look bad in any way they can. So they created this problem and blamed George Bush for it.
