Ohh man i know what you mean and I'm eager to see how other parents handled this!
My daughter is 21 months and everyday we go thought the same thing I have to hold her and squeeze her checks until she finally cries or opens her mouth and then screams the whole time! It feels awful , but I not hurting her or anything! I hope it gets easier because I hate doing it!
Good Luck!

My daughter LOVES to brush her teeth and gets mad when we are DONE brushing our teeth.
I started when she was just getting teeth to brush my teeth in front of her first and act like I'm having a great time doing it, singing songs, dancing, etc. Then I would get her little dora, sesame street, etc. toothbrush and do hers. The whole thing was fun. Sing songs with him, make noises with the toothbrush, etc.
About when she turned two and could handle it on her own we both go into the bathroom and I get my toothbrush out and get hers out and we brush our teeth together. I sit right in front of her on the floor and she mimicks my motions with the tootbrush. Then I say, "open wide, let me check" and I help finish it for her.
I've found that my girl will do anything I do first so always brush your teeth first and then let him try for a little bit himself. Just give him some time to look at the toothbrush and put it in his mouth by himself for a bit so he can get used to it and it will get easier.
Good luck!

We've had this problem with my youngest daughter. Try letting him brush his own. Also, I let my daughter just have the toothbrush with the kind of paste that is okay to swallow. She just chewed on the toothbrush, which cleans the teeth a bit. We also sang a song "this is the way we brush our teeth, brush our teeth, etc." That worked because she thought it was a game.

he may hate the taste or texture of the paste. Try brushing with water, once he is more willing to let you brush try introducing a small amount of toothpaste. He may respond well to role playing, let him brush your teeth first, show him how well you can behave, then try to brush his teeth. Keep at it, it may take quite some time, but his teeth must be kept clean!! Good luck

I let my baby (14 mos old) brush her own teeth with her toothbrush. Then if she is in an ok mood then I use her old toothbrush, the finger kind and do a really quick brushing. But she is so happy to do it herself.

Have you tried this brush: http://www.amazon.com/Babys-First-Toothbrush/dp/B000GKU7C0 Baby gets to hold it himself and each bite cleans several teeth. It could be that your little one want control of the situation and doesn't like the feeling of someone else poking around in his mouth. Once our little girl started brushing her own teeth she was much more amenable to us occasionally poking around in there, too :) Hope that helps!

We have this same problem with our 19 month old the best we can do are silly songs, faces, saying 'ahh' and sticking out our tongues...anything to try to get those little pearly whites accessible for a minute. Make it as fun as you can, it will help.

The easy answer is - DON'T. Stop brushing his teeth. Get him a baby toothbrush set. The first one you introduce him to is a rubber one to chew on, then the first brush, etc., etc., Let him chew on them and use kiddy toothpaste so that he enjoys the taste. Give it to him in his bath and there you go - all done by the time he is out.

Perhaps he does not like things in his mouth. My nephew can not handle anything besides a fork or spoon in his mouth without gagging. I suggest you give him a small toothbrush without toothpaste and let him do it himself. You can show him on your own teeth. He should not be using toothpaste at this age. His teethe will get clean without it.
