I have a 1997 Standard transmission ford escort and I feel a vibration in the steering. I am not sure what is causing that problem. At any speed I feel the vibration. Any ideas what would have caused that or how I can remedy the situation.

Either it's your tires are off-balance, or you have a seperated tire. Seperated meaning the steel belts in your tire have seperated from the rubber, causing it to be extremely unsafe. Go into a tire shop, one you either have an account with or one you trust, express the issue and have them check both. Most of the time that's the cause of excessive vibration in the steering wheel.

When was the last time you had your wheels balanced?

One of the most common cause of vibrations in the steering wheel is unbalanced wheels.

safety first .. check wheel nuts are not loose allowing wheel to shake loose .. check with the tire iron .. you can then drop into your local REPUTABLE tire centre and get the wheels balanced and checked .. its normal for tires to go off balance .. balancing will probably solve your problem and is relatively inexpensive ..

Sounds like you may need some front-end work.
