I'm very curious as to what believer and non-believer alike thinks what the bible means when it describes Esau as being "red and hairy"?

Well, Esau's name in Hebrew means "hairy", and, according to Genesis 25:25, it is a reference to his hairiness at birth. He is also called "Edom", which means red. Genesis relates this directly to his selling his birthright for some "red stuff" (Gen. 25:30). However, Genesis also makes a point of mentioning that he was red when he emerged from the womb (Gen 25:25). However, this may be an example of retroactive nomenclature, as the land which was supposedly inhabited by his descendants, Edom, contains a great abundance of red rock, and most scholars believe that the name of the land is a topographical reference.

i am a "believer" but when the Bible says Esau was "red and hairy" it could very well mean that. in fact when jacob wanted to disguise himself as esau to receive his fathers issac's firstborn blessing, he put on hairy clothing. issac was blind at the time, so he felt jacob with the hairy clothing, and concluded that it must be esau. (although he may have been suspicious, as he says "the voice is the voice of jacob, and the hands are the hands of esau).
in rabbinic literature, the rabbis often make the connecntion between the edomites, decendants from esau, and the romans. even though there is no biological connection between them, the romans were the 'representatives' of esau at the time. it is intersting to note therefore that color of rome was red, as was esau.

I'm a believer. Esau is stated in the Bible as being hairy. I don't go anywhere else with that. But it worked for Jacob who fooled his father, Isaac. It was enough for the promises of God to come true, the older shall serve the younger. God got the one He wanted to carry the promises of Abraham.
