So this scholarships are avaliable for everyone? I do not think so. One lost person is to much. In my home country I can study to doctor, teacher or whatever absolutely for free. Without applying for special programs or scholarships. I don't want this to be a competition between contries, it just makes me sad when I think about the situation so many people in USA must be in. Not beeing able to eat so save money for collage. What about all the single moms out there? It's just very sad. Knowledge is power.

Bob W--> Wow, I didn't see that coming.First of all, If you want to know, I have been working and paying my taxes like a good girl for years, and now I take a break for studying. I do not feel bad for taking the money I will get for this - because I have with my taxes paid for other people.
Second of all, I don't live in a communist country, and you can study whatever you want. No one choose this for you. It looks like you have no idea what you are talking about. Goodbye now.

Lynn A--> Excuse me for not having perfect english, after all this is not my native languages. Are you willing to have this discussion in some of the other languages I speak? Swedish, spanish and greek? Or maybe you only speak english.
I am so tired of trying to have conversations with americans that only attack my english spelling and grammar. It's quite rude and frankly very ignorant.

I share your views and agree with the fact that paying for vocational education (job-oriented) particularly widens the gap between the rich and the poor. I live in Pakistan , the situation is worse here. Only rich people can afford good education and the poor lags behind. Somehow the current government has introduced reforms in the current education system. We have the world's 2nd largest Open University (www.aiou.com.pk) and now we even have an online university (www.vu.edu.pk) with very low fee and quality courses.
I believe that primary, secondary and vocational education must be free in every healthy, prosperous society. Knowing about good and bad and how to survive is ones birth right and must never be deprived of it.

I agree that FREE education is a key element in enabling the poor to lift themselves from poverty. A high school diploma used to qualify a person for many entry level positions; now you need 2 years of community college or tech school just to be a file clerk or receptionist. Two years of college may sound trivial to a person with a support network, put a person completely on his/her own can take much longer than 2 years to get that 2 year degree. Such a person is nearly 30 before getting started in a job usually done by 10 year olds; it's hard to catch up when others have such a tremendous head start.
Later: several other responants are good examples of how dismissive the more fortunate are of the obstacles in the way of poor or isolated people getting that two year degree. If you had a clue you'd realize that even given free tuition and books it is still impossible for many to attend college -- we DO need little luxuries like food and shelter, and may even have obligations to provide care or support for others. It's total nonsense to pretend that the child of a chronically incarcerated single mom has the same opportunities as even the child of modestly well off but involved and caring blue collar parents.

this has to be discussed in depth.I think we have to see the quality in education first -if it only allows a certificate or give the kids a spring board for a positive life/ living that they do not turn to become criminals or stay nowhere in society. Then decide whether it is to be free or pay for it.
I think after all discussed it would be fair for those with means to pay something at that quality education and the rest get it free -as you say the poor ones. But at the top " no kid - rich or poor -be left behind with poor mentality to continue the vicious rot at society!Schools should teach good habits to stay with kids till death.

The fact that education through highschool is free in the US is something we all take for granted considering the state of other countries and their level of education. If a person were to come from a poorer family that can't afford to put them through college, they still have other options. Community colleges are easy to attend for free with financial waivers. Additionally, if they were to do well in school and/or sports, scholarships are readily available. That's why the American Dream is possible for anyone. Anyone can do it.

There is no logical reason anyone can't obtain a further education. With programs such as the Pell grant, there are tons of low income people obtaining degrees.
People make their own priorities about what they want out of life...for those who make the sacrifice and obtain higher education, they enjoy the rewards.
Edited to add: Maybe we pay more for our education because it's worth it? I know someone from Holland whose 4 year college degree ended up being equal to our high school diplomas.
Sorry, but I think most would be inclined to discuss education with someone who knows how to spell "college".

In communist countries, education is free, free, free...course you have to study what the government wants youto and if you fail, you are assigned to a wonderful job where you pretend to work and they pretend to pay you.
There's no such thing as a free lunch....Where do youthink your money comes from? Some human had to work for wages so the government could take it from him as taxes and give it to you
