your explore use Motorcraft Mercon 5 ATF.

Have your local repair shop to flush out your transmission or you can do it yourself.

go under your vehicle and you should see a round plug on the bottom of bell housing remove plug, slowly rotate your engine by hand until you find a small plug on the torque converter (use a 7/16 socket) remove the plug and let the converter drain out. Install plug and start up engine for 3 to 5 min. repeat the process that should empty both your transmission pan and conveter. Refill with fresh fluid. (Mercon 5). or cheaper way and it work also is go to local part store and buy 2 bottles of Mercon 5 friction modifier add to your transmission and that should do the trick.

Mercon V is correct. If you put Dextron III in it, which is what is most common you can get a bottle of Lubeguard (I think the green top) and put it in with the Dextron and bada boom bada bing you have all the properties of Mercon V. (There are 3 different Lubeguard products just read the bottle for the correct application but I'm pretty sure the Ford bottle is the green one.)

If you put in Ford Type F then you should have it flushed out. You can go to a local quick lube and their flush machine will get 98% of it out. You probably don't have to go to all the trouble of draining the torque converter........if it even has a drain. Most newer torque converters don't have a drain plug anyway.

You may mess up the transmission. Take it to one of the quick oil change places that have the equipment to flush out the old fluid. That way you will get all of the wrong fluid out of the torque converter too. You normally have to make an appointment for them to do this. It costs a little over a 100 bucks to get it done.

Call your ford car delearship ask for the service department and ask them. If you put the wrong stuff in take it to a mechanic and have them flush it out and refill it with the correct fluid.

I would suggest to drain it out asap and change the filter. Put the right fluid and maybe after a couple days drain it out and change the filter again.
They also have some new flush systems, check those out too.

Change the fluid in the explorer........duh
Look in the owner's manual and it will say what kind of fluid you need to use for your car.
