I picked one up at the Library in the "Free books" stack. Is this an important book to the Mormon faith or does it not mean anything to you or the LDS? Just wondering.

It was originally written by Bruce R. McConkie prior to becoming one of the 12 apostles of the church. He published a later edition after his calling to the 12. It has some accurate information about Mormon beliefs but it also contains a lot of opinion of the author. Not an official church publication but it does show a pretty accurate picture of the beliefs of the general church membership at the time that it was published...it's just that some of the beliefs weren't actually doctrinal and are not what the general church believes now other than some of the older generation. Many parts of the church's Bible Dictionary in the church published Bible came from Mormon Doctrine.

The thing about Mormon Doctrine, is it's not Mormon doctrine. It's interesting, yes. But I suggest reading it with a grain of salt, just as Bruce R McConkie himself suggests. It's a lot of his speculation on certain doctrines that we ourselves don't really understand and there has been no revelation to clarify. And some things in it are downright false.

He made numorous corrections to the book as his understanding of the gospel improoved.

But if you're an anti Mormon, it's a wonderful book, because you can use it to misquote and completely misrepresent the official stance of the church. Not like they need any help to do that, but you know...

I've never heard of it...it may be a book like "Mormon Beliefs for Idiots" or whatever those kind of books are called....just a basic overview of our doctrine...

It's not scriptural to us or anything like that. We only have 4 sacred texts(and some other revelations from the prophets) The Bible(first and foremost) then the book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of a Great Price.

It can be a useful reference tool, but it's far from being "official" church doctrine. Elder. McConkie wasn't even an apostle when he wrote it. And he puts in the disclaimer that it's HIS work and no one elses.

So, it's not important like the scriptures, or the conference talks. It's better than the Journals of Discourses.

Does that answer you?

It's an interesting reference book but has many flaws. I have a copy and I do refere to it when writing talks but I realize that not all of it matches doctrine.

It is not scripture.

To my understanding, they don't consider it doctrine, that it's just his opinion.
