The linguist school in the army is a year long. This qualifies to have a spouse move in during this training period. I'm unaware if the air force is the same.
A great forum for military questions is http://www.military.com. You'll notice the tabs on top of the website and you can go to "community" and then forums. I think it is one of the best, if not THE best, active forum on military issues for all the services. Retired, war veterans, active duty and reserved folks are all over that place and know their stuff.
If the Air Force is similiar to the army, once after the soldier arrives to the base they can go to a "housing" section of the base and get papers to be signed by their superiors and allow a spouse to move in within days, or weeks, depending on whether or not housing is available.
Upon my arrival to base years ago, there were open units and I had a house 2 days later after looking at several different units. It was pretty smooth, and I would hope the air force would be even more easy to deal with than the army was.
Good luck.
Remember! http://www.military.com. A GREAT FORUM for military folks and their families.

There are no guarantees that your family will ever be able to live with your spouse on base. Base housing often has a long waiting list and is based on many factors including rate/rank/priority of the government. The family can always live in the town where you are stationed, nothing bans that. However while your spouse is in the beginning of his career the AF will have restrictions on your housing situation, he will be required to live on base. Once he is able to move off base a small monetary allowance called a BAQ will give you more money because he is not utilizing the barracks. It isn't much, but it's better than nothing.

Ok. Once he graduated from Basic training, he can take his family to DLI in Monterey, CA. Of course, that depends on what language he will be studying. If it is a CAT 2 language, like French, German, or Spanish--these are only 6 months, so family can not move uot there. Anything longer, you can join him there.
I recommend the Mucky Duck on Avarado Street and Doc Rickets Lab. Great clubs!!
Have fun!

If your husbands Tech School is longer than 26 weeks,
Most linguist Class's are longer than 26 weeks.
You will be on his orders after Basic to accompany him to his Tech School.
The military will pay to move you and your household goods, from where you live now, to his Tech School in California.
If the Tech School is shorter than 26 weeks, then you will be on his orders to his first permanent duty assignment after Tech School.

DLI is 99% of the time an Accompanied billet, but expect at least 30 days before you can move out to Monterey.
avoid the Mucky Duck.. food and beer is better at the Brit. but you MUST have the garlic fries at Archie's diner: sinful!

You will get 2-3 thousand dollars. You do not get that money for completing basic training, you get that money because you worked for 2 months.
