Points for minor offences (e.g. speeding, traffic lights, etc.) are on your licence and 'active' for 3 years. 'Active' means they count towards the totting-up procedure.
They stay on your licence, but 'inactive' for a further 12 months - a total of 4 years from the date of the offence. After that, you can pay to have the points removed - currently £22.
You must declare the points to your insurer for 5 years from the date of the offence.

In round terms the endorsements for minor offences cannot be removed before 4 years is up from the date of conviction. They're only "live" insofar as they can be considered under totting up procedures for 3 years, but they sit there for a further year.

Learner drivers and new drivers tend to stand out by the way they drive nervously and do so even more when being followed by a Police car. The chances of her being stopped are actually very high. Driving other than in accordance with her licence and invalid insurance because of that - all could end in very big expensive tears

The link for the DVLA website AKA DirectGov for driving convictions is shown below.
Minor offences stay for 4 years. Most insurers ask that they be disclosed for 5 years from the date of conviction - not the offence date. Below is an extract from the Directgov Website for your perusal.
Endorsements must remain on a licence for 11 years from date of conviction if the offence is:
* drinking/drugs and driving (shown on the licence as DR10, DR20, DR30 and DR80)
* causing death by careless driving whilst under the influence of drink/drugs (shown on the licence as CD40, CD50 and CD60)
* causing death by careless driving, then failing to provide a specimen for analysis (shown on the licence as CD70)
Endorsements must remain on a licence for four years from date of conviction if the offence is:
* reckless/dangerous driving (shown on the licence as DD40, DD60 and DD80)
* offences resulting in disqualification
* disqualified from holding a full licence until a driving test has been passed
Endorsements must remain on a licence for four years from the date of offence in all other cases.

I would ring. It depends on the offence. 4 + 1 years is normally for more serious offences such as drink driving. I was under the impression that speeding offences is 3 + 1 years. But good advice - ring and check.

The points on your license last for 4yrs live and then you have to wait a further year to have them removed. It also costs you £22 to have them removed. I enquired about mine a few weeks ago, as they are due to be removed this november.
