The truck does not quit completely, it just refuses to accellerate. To temporarilly fix it, I simply remove my foot from the accelerator pedal until the RPM reaches about 1,000 and the everything returns to normal until the next time, which may be in 2 mintes or 2 days.

Wow, that was a long time ago I asked the question, I did replace the injection pump and solved the problem. I am still driving the ole 1998 and it is still running great.
Now how do I remove this question?

the cummins controller will bring it back to the idle governor when it sees parameters that could hurt the engine. it could be the apps(accelerator pedal position sensor), crank sensor, cam sensor, transfer pump, or injector pump. these are the most common. it could also be the fuel filter. when the fuel volume to the injector pump drops low (assuming you have a 24 valve) it will do this and set a code. the transfer pump with low output will do the same thing, and either way it can destroy your injector pump just as fast as you read this answer. i would reccomend getting it scanned asap, and take it easy unti you know what codes are in it. most codes won't turn the engine light on in a diesel, especially older ones, because they don't meet the same emission requirements as gas engines.

Sounds like a throttle position sensor malfuction. You didn't state what year and type engine it has. There are 4 types of diesels that were used in the Dodge. The old mechanical 5.9, the 24v 5.9. the 5.9 CRD, or the new 6.7 CRD. I used to have a 2001.5 Dodge ram 2500 w/ the 24v 5.9L. Although I had no problems with it, I still learned a lot from owning it. i dont know what year it is however it sounds like a transfer pump or maybe an injector pump or even both. they had a lot of problems with those. also how often are you changing the fuel filter and air filter? that is very important maint. for a cummins engine, is smoke coming out of exhaust when this happens and if so what color is it? i guess it could be a trans problem. or could even be a controller problem, but i see alot more of the pumps than anything.

start with the fuel filter and fuel tank first in case there is sludge in there then check the computer chip at your dealer take your diesel on couple hundred mile trip once a while they need to clean the injectors!!

Change the fuel filter first> 1 tank of bad fuel will pack it up>Is it still under warranty>All dodge diesels are 12v duel battery's>

That is AWFUL fuel pressure. Start at the tank and work your way up If its not blowing a lot of smoke out the tail pipe...dont worry about the turbo.

If it's a Stick then you need to go see the Dodge dealership near you. But if it' s an automatic you need to get a new transmission put in.

injecters are going bad buy addives for diesels and take a hammer and tep on the cataliconverter
