Obviously the first six people don't know old dodges because they all said you need to change the K member......NO YOU DON'T. Only in the old A-Body cars. Your car is known as a B-Body. A big block and a small block will bolt right in on the K member. You will need a "big block" transmission. The bolt pattern on the 440 and 318 transmissions are different. Your 318 probably has a 904 or a 999 transmission anyway and you will want a 727 torqueflight.

It's really not that hard to change out. Even the electronics will work for the most part.

You may want a bigger radiator as well. The rear end could also be a problem. You will need an 8 3/4 rear end. The driveshaft may also need to be adjusted.

However all this can be easy. If you can find "donor" cars then it's all bolt in swaps.

On the suspension - up front you have torsion bars. You can just crank them up for the added weight. In the rear you have leaf springs. Not beefy enough for any hard driving but if you have to swap rear ends you can usually get the leafs too. You can also buy leafs after market. You want 6 leafs on the right and 5 on the left. Stock your car probably has 4 and 3. Tracktion bars can be a temporary fix but they are way out of style. A longer snubber on the center of the rear end will also be desirable.

By the way, except for the drive shaft all Challengers, Cudas, Road Runners, Satellites, Cornets, and other Chargers can be donor cars. Even the big luxury cars can be donor cars on the engine and transmission.

Schumacher makes conversion kits that can be used without having to replace the K-Frame. Here -> http://engine-swaps.com/ I have ordered standard mounts from them, but never tried one of their conversion Kits. I think "Amy m" on answers has used this kit.

You will have to replace the transmission If you have an automatic. If you have a 4-speed the A833 would just need a Big-Block belhousing. If Auto, Depending on which transmission you go with, you may also have to replace the cross-member and driveline to get it to fit correctly. Schumacher may have a conversion mount, but it still doesnt solve the driveline problem.

Once you add that much weight to the front end, you might want to go with new torsion bars as well, unless you have the HD bars, the stock small block ones wont quite be strong enough.

Good Luck.

As another has said, there are several things involved. Motor mounts, K member, transmission possibly a different driveshaft, transmission cooling lines, radiator. Try to find someone who has done this near you to get all the particulars or find a website for Chargers and seek the information there.

K-member, motor mounts, trans x-member and mount, rad, torsion bars, axle, transmission may be different--you'll want the 727 TorqueFlite, not the 904, shifter and throttle linkages or cables. May be better to get a donor car that's missing the engine/trans but has all the other components.

You are going from a small block to a big block you will have to get an adapter kit for the motor mounts and beaf up the front suspension to hold up the extra weight. does the tranny bolt pattern match up?

dodges were funny that way..
i was never a dodge man...but i do know that is the case on many of the dodges of that time.....
but i hear many on this site dispute that fact
