Boys need to relax and feel very comfortable to have a #2. Also, it helps to have good footing so they can push with their legs. What worked for my son is The Potty Stool http://www.thepottystool.com This stool makes every toilet kid-sized. The handles on this stool make all the difference. My kids potty trained quickly because they were so excited about this stool. I also put toilet paper over the water to stop splashes. Tried and true behavioristic model that works great---get some of his favourite treats-sugarfree gum-fruit snacks. Anything small that he really likes. Each time he sits on the toilet and attempts to have a bowel movement give him a treat. If he is successful, give him 2 treats. Do this for about a week, then start giving the treats only if he has a bowel movement on the toilet. Within 2 weeks he will be going regularly. Then slowly start skipping the treats until you are no longer giving them. By then he will have the system down pat.
I potty trained all seven of my children this way. No stress, positive reinforcement!

Potty Training in general was the same for my son and my two daughters that are potty trained. I have yet to commit to this with my youngest. We asked them every five minutes if they had to pee, if they said no we didn't make them, if they said yes we went. We said nothing when they had accidents, and made A BIG DEAL when they made it. I had my twins potty trained in three days! NO JOKE!

My daughter did it when she was ready....pushing won't get you anywhere. My son was 4 before he was ready, I used penny's for rewards everytime he went. 1 for pee 5 for poo, he loved it. Would go every few mins and try to do something lol
