My wife and I are debating which mattress to get. My main question is for long term use. Will either mattress suffer from the hammock effect.... is there going to be a hole where we sleep?

We have a sleep number bed. Personally, I love it. When i read or watch tv I put it down real low so my butt sinks down in to the bed and it makes it really comforable to sit up. Then when I sleep I put it at my normal number. There would be no "hammock" effect with the Sleep Number because it is air that creates the support.

As far as the Memory Foam mattress, I've only slept in them in a hotel. My huge problem with this bed was the heat it retained. I was so hot that I couldn't sleep. I know that you don't state what age you are, but if your wife is either at an age where she's going to be pregnant, or an age where she's going to be in menopause this is not the bed for the two of you!!!

Hammock Mattress Pad

I've tried both, and frankly went back to a conventional mattress. The memory foam would not allow me to roll over after about thirty minutes, I was stuck in that matress, that bed left the next day. Then I tried the sleep number bed, and could never seem to find a number that was comfortable for me, it either got too soft or too damned hard. and the difference was like one number 61 or 62. So after about a month with that I just went down to the local sleep country store and got a conventional mattress with a pillow top, and I sleep quite nicely now.

"is there going to be a hole where we sleep?"

Memory foam conforms to your body shape "like sleeping in warm mud", as compared to the pushback support of latex.

Consider firm talalay latex with a wool fleece pad.
