Between the current library of PS3 exclusives, the delays for games, Home (Sony's new online service), and the Dualshock3 controller (finally - returning rumble to the controller!) it's awfully hard to recommend a PS3 at this time.
When you throw in the cost of the PS3, and the fact that games look no better than their 360 counterparts, it's downright impossible.
Right now, the 360 has the games - even in areas that were traditionally the Playstation's strengths, like RPGs, and exclusive titles like Katamari Damacy, Ace Combat, and others.
Lots of people will tell you that the PS3 has it's best titles still to come, and if that's the case, maybe the PS3 will be worth buying at some point in the future. However, you don't buy a game console for what "might" arrive. You buy it for what's available NOW, and right NOW, the 360 has the clear advantage.

people are so dumb- PS3 is cheaper than xbox 360, you need to dissect the information about the prices
the prices will come as you read the post below
ps3 is BETTER FOR MANY MANY reasons
i'll list some of the reasons
- ps3 has a built-in blu-ray player
- ps3 has much more and better exclusives, most of them cant go to xbox 360 because it cant handle that many data(DVD- 8.5gb, blu-ray 50gb)
- online is free for ps3 not like 360
- ps3 will have over 300 games released by this spring
- when developers get used to the system, the graphics will be WAY better than 360. should take them a year to get used to it
- playstation home is coming out this spring, its a virtual community where you can hang out with friends and customize your own apartment which xbox doesnt have(FREE)
- ps3 is a true HD console. xbox 360 upscale games to 1080p and ps3 DISPLAY games up to 1080p
- built in Wi-Fi
- xbox 360: 33% hardware failure
ps3: .2% hardware failure(see that decimal? thats less than 1%!!)
- rumble returns in spring 2008
- you can upgrade your harddrive without voiding warranties with any 2.5 HDD, which xbox cant because you have to buy a xbox HDD
(they actually have the step by step on how to upgrade it on playstation.com)
those are the ones that i know right off my mind but there are much more reason than this
Prices as of today:
ps3- 80gb: $599
60gb: $499
xbox 360(premium)- $399 (if you want the accessories that ps3 comes with, that would add up to over 700 dollars)

PS3.
Look at your PS2 collection and which games you enjoy.
Now look at which system is going to showcase these best on the new one.
If your picks include;
Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, Ico/Shadow of the colossus, Socom, God of war,
then you don't have a choice to make.
If you like a good variety of game;
such as Disgaea, we love katamari, singstar, Okami, Eye-toy, Frequency, etc
then go for the one that encourages developers to do something different. (remember also that most of the big multi-format franchises are big because of the Playstation. i.e. GTA, devil may cry, Timesplitters, Tomb raider, Pro evo. soccer, resident evil, etc)
Also worth noting, the 360 is outselling the PS3 in the US, but not anywhere else.
But, if you like countless generic FPS' and the ability to play your own music while your playing (and can't work your stereo at the same time!?) then go for a 360.
PoohBear : Right NOW or the future ? Well when the 'future' is barely a matter of months, I think it's a no-brainer.

ive had both 360 and ps3 and i would wait a little bit longer till they come down in price and more games are available ive sold both and now play my ps2 im going to wait a while too i was dissapointed with the graphics on the 360 most of the games are just like ps2 graphics except for things like cod3 brilliant graphics and motorstorm on ps3 im not too bothered about graphics but when you pay hundreds of pounds for a next gen console you expect the best but ive been dissapointed i think ps2 is still going to be around for a while yet.

First things first.... PoohBear, not everybody thinks that way... you know... "You buy it for what's available NOW", some people actually buy things because of their potential, quality and reliability. The PS3's quality and reliability is undeniably much better than the Xbox's reliability right NOW. Not to mention that some people actually buy the PS3 because it's a MEDIA HUB, not just a gaming console. So if you're the type of person that buys things because they're hot right NOW, that's fine, but not every consumer thinks the same way you do.
Now to get back to the original question... I have both the 360 and the PS3.... there's no denying that the 360 may have more titles out right now, but there are hundreds of titles scheduled for release on the PS3 between now and March 2008.
PS3 EXCLUSIVE TITLES
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS3_exclusives
PS3 ALL TITLES
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ps3_games
Putting aside the topic of who has more games out right now the 360 or the PS3, the next thing you want to look at is VALUE and RELIABILITY. In this department, I think the PS3 wins hands down. Yes the PS3 isn't cheap but neither is a Ferrari.... meaning that you'll have to dish out some cash, but what you get in return is a strong, fast and reliable piece of equipment.
What do you get when you buy a PS3???
-Bluetooth Technology
-BluRay Player
-Medica Card Reader
-Built in WiFi
-Upscales regular DVDs to HD quality
-Upscales PS1 and PS2 to HD quality
-No external power adapter (or BRICK as it's known in the Xbox)
-No overheating issues
-No softaware issues
-No hardware issues
-FREE internet
-FREE online gaming
-Support for up to SEVEN (7) wireless controllers
-HDMI version 1.3 (Xbox Elite only has version 1.2)
-Printer support (You can hook up a printer to the PS3)
On the other hand, this is what you can expect to get when buying the "cheaper" XBOX 360:

Trust me, I OWN a 360 and I'm already on my THIRD (3rd) one due to the various hardware and software problems I've had with it.
The failure rate of the PS3 is LESS THAN 1%.... whereas the 360 has a 33% failure rate... that means that 33 of every 100 Xbox 360s sold have serious hardware or software problems, which render it useless. Regardless of how many games may be out for the 360 RIGHT NOW, it doesn't mean a thing since you can't play games on a 360 that's fried.
Again, I have BOTH systems, and I'd be crazy to recommend the 360 over the PS3 even if the 360 has more games out right now. At the end of the day, the PS3 is the better built console with a focus on FUTURE true NEXTGEN gaming.
You may also want to keep in mind that since you already own a PS2, you'll be able to play all your PS2 games on the PS3 in HD quality.
HOPE THIS HELPS!

i went with the ps3 and i couldnt be happier. just read on here all the people that get the 3 red lights and have to send in their 360. its a horribly built machine. i dont care how many good games they have(which are all first person shooters) you cant play if the system is sent in for repairs. i love my ps3 and the game library is growing every month. by christmas there is going to be lots of good games out. and next year, well just watch out . tons of great games. you cant go wrong with the ps3. the only reason to get a 360 is if you live and breathe halo. and in my opinion, resistance is a better game(although i have not played part 3)

Let's compare PS3 and XBOX 360:
Almost a third of XBOX 360 are malfunctioning right from the start. PS3 return rate is only around 0.2%.
Let's compare them
PS3 has 7+1 kernels in Cell processor, Xbox 360 -only 3x2
PS3 uses advanced tech called Blu-Ray, one disc can store up to 54 gb (in the future - up to 200 gb), Xbox 360 - regular dual DVD (9.5 gb).
Calculations per sec - PS3 - 51-billion-dot-product-operati... per second
Xbox 360 - 33.6-billion-dot-product-opera... per second
PS3 has full media support - USBs, built-in card reader (except 20 gb version), ability to use printer and so on.
Xbox 360 has USBs and only 2 memory slots.
PS3 supports up to 7 Bluetooth Controllers
Xbox 360 - up to 4 Controllers
PS3 - wi-fi included (except 20 gb version)
Xbox 360 - wi-fi will cost you around 100 $
Graphics are stronger in PS3, due to RSX chip, that was developed by Nvidia exclusively for PS3. To estimate its power (roughly) - take 8600 Ultra nvidia graphics card, multiply it by 2 - get a result, still PS3 stronger, because 8600 Ultra runs on 400 Mhz and RSX runs on 550 Mhz.
PS3 has a chip from AGEIA company. It does to physics of the game same thing GPU (videocard processor) does to graphics. This card is on sale for PC. The price is around 350$.
Xbox 360 is widely known for so-called "red ring of death" problem - it gets overheated easily. My PS3 was running for more than 8 hours non-stop with no problems. Sometimes Xbox 360 becomes so overheated, that thermopaste on CPU melts, drips on motherboard and successfully shortcircuits it.
Besides all of this, I've seen disassembled Xbox 360 - regular PC architecture - Billy Gates is an uninventive nerd (as usual).
When I saw disassembled PS3 - it was a surprise - smart architecture, good cooling (don't buy external PS3 coolers - they make everything worse - original system is good), etc.
In 2008 we'll get more than 300 games, including Metal Gear Solid 4 and other great exclusives. Here is the great link to the future PS3 releases. http://ps3.ign.com/index/release.html......
PS3 online world will be free, Xbox 360 - you have to pay.
In some countries people call Xbox 360 "Coffin 360".
The funniest thing, that right now there are no games for PS3, that show full potential of the console.
Sony expects PS3 to stay on the market for, at least, 7-10 years.
I didn't mention Wii, because it's so weak, no point to talk about it.

ps3 all the way. for £425 you get the most powerful console, blu ray player, wifi, hdmi. to get the same spec 360 youd have to spend at least £450. you can play your ps2 games on the ps3, surf the net..the games look and play great..60gb hard drive, free on line play (not like 360)...at the moment you can get 3 games and controller free with a ps3... i had a 360 but had to sell it because the ps3 is so damn good.
