If there is enough of the tooth left to rebuild, they can do it that way. It is only when there is NOT enough of a tooth left to rebuild that they need to use a post to anchor the crown to.

We used to believe that all teeth with root canals needed a post, then it was determined that this wasn't true. Presently, the only reason to place a post is if there isn't enough tooth left to hold a bonded buildup.
