Hi, I have just applied to the council my interest in running a local shop, I passed the credit check okay, but now I need a reference from my bank. Can anyone please tell me what this is and what sort of information the bank gives out about you? Thanks.

Your bank or building society will write a letter confirming that your accounts are in credit and that there have been no problems with the running of them in the past to verify that you are trustworthy enough to take on a financial commitment. If you are in debt, your account provider will only be able to state that they are unable to comment as I believe it is against regulation to say otherwise. In either case your bank will not give out any other personal details, so nothing to worry about.
