I'm trying to come up with a story to help a kid get over her fear of sleeping alone. By understanding those things that scare other kids, I can help put her fears into perspective.

Any input will be appreciated.

I would never get scared by noises, but all kinds of other things would drive me insane. The dark was worst: For a long time I couldn't sleep without a light on purely because I was scared the nasty irrational shadow monsters would get me.

What advice can I offer you, then? Well, not being a professional in these things there isn't much. I might suggest the approach my parents took: When I told them about the evil three-eyed goblin living under my bed, they gave me a large axe especially effective at getting rid of goblins. To this day, I have no idea where they got it from, only that the goblin was rather afraid of it.
There was no axe in reality, but imagination can be used as a defence just as much as a weapon.

Well I dont remember this ever happening, to me when I was a kid, but it scares me now and I am 25 years old. I only seem to notice it when Im in the house by myself. The sound of the house setteling, and the T.V does it too. it scares me everynight when I am their by myself. I call somebody, or see what time my boyfriend will be home, and Icut on all the lights down stairs. When I was kid though, I hated when the closet door was left open I always thought some1 was in there. Thats what scared me as a kid not so much noises. I guess because I grew up in a house with 8 people, so I always knew that the noises I heard was either my sister snoring, or one of my brothers going to the bathroom.

On my boy's first Christmas I had finished wrapping all the gifts my parents had sent them and had them stacked in the corner of our room until I could move them to a different location. All of a sudden one of the packages started vibrating and singing! I jumped and couldn't get the stupid thing to shut off so I took it to the basement so it could either stop playing or have the batteries run out. Scared the crap out of me. Another was when they were about 3 months and we had some toys that have their own stands and dangle above the kids (I forgot what they're called). Well, they were on the ground and I was putting the boys to bed and after they were in their cribs and I was leaving the room, one of the toys started playing the music but it was slow and warped like the batteries were dying. The thing didn't shut off for over two hours and since then it's worked perfectly. I never have changed the batteries and I've been using it with my daughter. It was a one time thing but it was creepy. Btw, neither of these toys were motion sensitive and needed someone to press a button to go off but nobody touched them.

My daughter is 7 and gets scared at night she is afraid of the dark and of any strange noises at night, during the day she is fine unless it's a loud noise. I have put a fan in her room this drowns out alot of noises and she sleeps with a night light and a small dim bed lamp.

My 4 1/2 year old is very afraid of storms at night. And then any other sound that sounds like it could be a storm she gets nervous about. For example, a plane flies overhead, and she comes to the top of the stairs and calls out, Mommy, is that a storm? And I have to convince her no, it was just a plane, there's no storm, go back to bed. If there is a real storm, forget it, she's in our bed for the night and there's no way around it.

I was always afraid of the dark, and thunderstorms definitely scared me a lot! My daughter doesn't seem to have any fears yet, as far as sleeping goes. She wasn't fond of thunder at first, but I made it fun and acted silly about it and she likes it now. One time on our way home from the store, in our car, she cried cuz it was pouring rain so hard that it was so noisy. She didn't like that.

We adults, especially parents, are kept up by the noise of the faucet dripping at night. By American tradition, kids are frightened by the bogey man and ghosts that are steeped in American tradition. The best safeguards for the kids is to not let them sleep alone separate and be there for them for obvious reasons.

I was never a fan of thunderstorms. I'm still not. I don't mind them during the day, but at night they frighten me -- especially the loud claps on thunder that wake me from a night's sleep. My kids can sleep through them just fine, but if a storm begins before my son falls asleep, it's difficult getting him to bed. He has a mini flashlight that he can take to bed only during thunderstorms. He has a night-light, but the additional light helps him be brave.
