I am looking for a job, have a BS Biology and research and technical writing experience. My pastor told me that God does not want me to work...is this true? He told me I must be fruitful and volunteer at a church and depend on my pretty wealthy parents. I would rather work. Any suggestions?

Given that you seem to be female, I am assuming that the above recommendation of "grow some balls" probably isn't appealing to you.

Note, no where in the Bible does it claim that women are not to work. Indeed, ancient economics required that women labored just as hard as men. Biblically, both men and women tended to the flocks, for example.

You might, however, want to look for a different church.

Also, it might do your Pastor well to remember that women were the last thing God created. Women, then, are the finishing touch of all creation. Certainly we should no more try to keep women hidden in a house than we should try to remove van gough's signature from one of his paintings, the Moment of Creation from the Sistine Chapel, or to add a little more marble onto Michelangelo’s David.

However, if you want to work in research at a B.S. level, I hope you don't expect to be having intellectually stimulating activities. In most labs you'll be given only the most menial of tasks. I'd recommend looking into an M.S. or Ph.D. program if you want to have more of a role in research. Of course, there is always a market for translating scientific jibberish into something the public can understand; you could probably get a job at a new agency of some description.

I think you should ask your pastor where in the Bible it says you should live with and mooch off your parents till you're 50. Cuz that could change my life, too.
But really, I don't see how if you had a full time job, that you would have absolutely no time left for "the Lord".
Hah - I found a good scripture for you to show him -
2 Thessalonians 3:10 - "If anyone does not want to work, neither let him eat." verses 11 and 12 go along with it, so I'm not taking it out of context or anything either.

Get a new pastor. We all have choices in life. God gave us free will. He also gave us talents and desires. As long as those desires are not harmful, they are there for a reason - to make us happy. Striving toward a dream is not a bad thing, as long as you do it while putting God first.

However, if you have children at home, it would be good to spend as much time as possible with them.

You must work in order to sustain yourself. You may not get the job you want at the moment, but at least is a job. Keep working hard to fulfill all your goals, without forsaking God and His kingdom.

I would not listen to that pastor.
Volunteering at church is fine, but it must be something you want to do, not something you get guilt-tripped into doing.
What? He is recommending you become a leech on your parents?
Work, by all means, work. It may not immediately be in your field, but find work. And, maybe a different church.

Ask God. If it is in his plan he will provide you with a job just be patient because it will all work out for the good.

That's pretty much the heart of it isn't it? If someone believes there is a deity and yet the deity never communicates how do you know what the deity wants you to do?

Why the freak are you asking us what God wants for you!? Why don't you ask Him yourself?? OR be a man, grow some balls, and make up your own mind!
