In the same way as Jupiter was rocked two years ago by the million-megaton impact of the comet Shoemaker-Levy, so Earth was bombarded 12,000 years ago by the fragments of a similar celestial visitor. It caused tidal waves, the mass extinction of many prehistoric species such as the mammoth and sabre-toothed tiger, and turned the world dark for months.

Professor Alexander Tollmann, the author of the study and an internationally renowned geologist, said: “The consequence of the impact explosions appears to have included a chain of up to a dozen individual catastrophes, including earthquakes, geological deformation, a vapour of plume and tidal waves.”
So since earth's destruction can very well happen again, do you see your life snuffed out while beleivers are spared from GOD's wrath?
Don't mean to sound harsh but many of you say things Happened in the past it's natural for earth to destroy life I guess you mean it would be natural for earth to snuff out your life for eternity?

There has been no world wide geological study that has found any evidence that there was a global flood. There is the iridium layer that proves a comet or meteor hit the earth and may have killed out the dinosaurs.

Personally I think the story about Noah was a very localized one, that over the retelling it grew and grew. The idea of a man saving his animals from a flood would be unusual, but oral history has a tendency to blow stories out of proportion. So a few goats and sheep being saved on a raft or a roof top isn't as interesting as a man saving all the animals in the world.

It is right up there with the Creationist museum that says that man and dinosaurs lived together in harmony in the Garden of Eden.

There is one big problem. The geologic evidence does not show that there was ever a world wide flood. For instance, the ice caps do not have any layers that show this. There are many places in the world that do not show any sign of flooding in the geologic layers. Those layers of rock and dirt tell as much as any history book.

Next up, the fossil evidence shows that life has been around for a very long time and has been adapting to the world the entire time. Also, paleontological evidence does not show large groups of people that were instantly wiped out by a flood. In fact, it shows that people have been around for a very long time.

Also, doesn't the bible say that it rained 40 days and 40 nights? Umm. I guess this guy is trying to say that the bible is wrong? Ok, then what are the other wrong parts. If you believe this guy, then you should also be questioning the rest of the bible. That is a big problem when religion tries to hijack science. Religion can never keep its facts straight.

roflmao..

crimson, you just demonstrated your massive ignorance.

1. When Jupiter was hit by the comet, it blocked out the sun for years from the planets atmosphere. NOT 40 DAYS.

2. Thats the same thing that would happen to the earth and the Earth is MUCH MUCH smaller. It would NOT be 40 days and nights and ONLY 40 days and nights. It would be years and there would be evidence of it everywhere which there isn't. Its a desperate attempt by the ancients to explain why you can find sea shells on the mountains. WE, as a modern people, know why there are sea shells on the mountains and it isn't because there was a massive flood.

3. A comet would not cover all the landmasses on earth even if the resulting tsunamis were to raise the sea levels.

4. If the comet were as big as you're claiming, all life on this planet would have been wiped from existance, INCLUDING the bacteria. And no little boat built during the stone age would have been able to survive the massive tidal waves, the resulting rain storms, and the blocking out of the sun. That little boat would have been torn to shreds.

5. No boat in the world, anywhere, would have been able to hold two of every animal on the planet, and all their food, with only 8 people to take care of them for 40 days and 40 nights. To be able to do that, it would have had to have been the size of a small continent.

6. China has no record of a mass flood anywhere on its landmass. How do you explain that? That god ignored China?

Please crimson, use your brain for once instead of your bible.

It absolutely would be natural for the earth to "snuff out my life". Whether it is for all eternity is a matter of debate. I don't consider a comet a manifestation of "God's wrath", just a natural phenomenon of the universe. And there is no evidence of a worldwide flood. There are some areas where there is evidence of flooding, but nowhere near worldwide. Besides, this story was cribbed from the earlier story of Gilgamesh. The most tidal waves could do is flood coastal areas, which are only a small percent of the world. And if you believe the story, it wasn't waves but rain that caused the flood.

You're assuming that a comet is powerful enough to "snuff out life" for eternity. This is not the case. At the worst, it would be capable of causing the extinction of large species (like people) but would not be able to completely eradicate life.

It's natural for natural events to cause mass extinctions. It's happened at least 6 times during Earth's history.

I didn't think you thought the Earth was 12,000 years old.

Not many people actually buy that line mostly because there would be impact craters and they haven't been found. Although it would cause huge waves that may be the start of the flood stories. But I can guarantee you that a wooden boat isn't going to make it through a 200' wave. At least this one is possible.

And how, exactly, did Noah survive when all the rest of the world was destroyed? What exactly did he and those thousands of animals eat on the ark? No light = no growing plants, even in containers on a ginormous ark.

And yes, we each get "snuffed out" for all eternity, whether it's a comet or old age.

This bit of pseudo-science brought to you by The Golden Age Project:

http://www.goldenageproject.org.uk/19giantcomet.html

With regards to Professor Alexander Tollmann's theory...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tollmann%27s_hypothetical_bolide

Quaternary geologists, paleoclimatologists, and planetary geologists specializing in meteorite and comet impacts have rejected the Tollmann bolide hypothesis as proposed by Kristan-Tollmann and Tollmann (1994). They reject his hypothesis because

1 The evidence used to argue it can more readily be explained by more mundane and less dramatic geologic processes

2 Many of the events alleged to be associated with this impact occurred at the wrong time, sometime hundreds to thousands of years before or after his hypothesized impacts; and

3 There is a lack of any credible physical evidence for the cataclysmic environmental devastation and characteristic deposits that kilometer-high tsunamis would have created had they actually occurred.

People have attributed random acts of nature to 'god' or 'gods' throughout recorded history.

The fact is - the universe is a very cold and uncaring place. The entire human race on planet earth could be wiped out if the earth were to move even 1 mile closer or further from the sun.

The only reason we exist in the first place, and can question our own existence is a freak occurence - though not that unlikely considering the billions and billions of stars (thanks Carl Sagan!!) - each with its own solar system.
