Hello all - I've searched the answers here and can't seem to tell whether or not my cardigan corgi is in heat or she's sick. She has had no bleeding that I can tell of, but she is enlarged, she's peeing more frequently, licking herself constantly, and my 5yr old male cardigan licks the floor wherever she has been sitting. They are both leash trained and have not been out of my sight, he is neutered, but we did have an "incident" at the beach about 5wks ago with a male puppy trying to mount her, but it did not seem successful as I got to her and picked her up quickly. Do you all have any ideas? thanks in advance for your help.

It could be she is in heat, or she could have a urinary infection. The only way to tell is get a vet to have a look since we can't see her to examine her. If your neutered male hasn't shown any interest in mounting her, it might be because he is neutered, but very frequently, even neutered males will mount, and sometimes even tie, with a female in heat when she is in his home. The fact that she is licking herself so frequently could be hiding the show of blood, or there are even what are called "silent heats" where there simply is no blood to be detected. I have lots of ideas, but unfortuneately, none will do you a bit of good since I can't see her. Sorry.

From the sounds of it sounds like she may be in the beginning of being in heat. You probably won't see the blood on her bottom, but when a dog is in heat they do become swollen in the bottom area, they will lick themselves alot and the blood does drop to the floor. Have you seen what is on the floor where your male dog is licking from where she sat? It is common for the male dog to lick up the blood that dropped. So instead of watching her bottom start watching the floor and see if you see any drops of blood.
If you are not seeing any blood (and with a male dog around you may not) but it is better to be safe than sorry, so if there is no spotting happening then take her to the vet to get checked out, she may have a bladder infection, of which the frequent peeing can be a sign of. This is something that the vet can give her a medacine for and get it all cleared up.
As far as her being bred, when dogs breed and the male is successful, his penis will actually get stuck for a period of time. This is due to his penis being engorged with blood.
So if the other male dog was trying to mount her and you went right over to pick her up then I would just about gaurantee that she is not pregnant.
Hope all works out for you and your dogs!!

I think that your dog is in heat, my dog is a year old an she does the same thing. I do not think that she is pregnant. My dog constantly licks herself also. Your dog is still apuppy an it maybe her first heat, try watching her going to the bathroom sometimes when there first heat starts there is only blood when they urinate. I really don't thinks she's sick or anything. Just keep watching her. It usually lasts at least 14 days if it doesn't get any better it may be an infection i would take her to see a vet.

If you "want a vet to answer your question", then you need to call a vet. This site is 90% BYBs and kids. And even if I told you I was a vet, you shouldn't believe me. I could also tell you that I'm Angelina Jolie, the queen of venus, or a Yankee's Middle Reliever and it doesn't make it true.

It sounds like she is going in to heat - the whole process takes about 2-3 weeks - 1 week of pre-heat with some of the symptoms you mention - 1 week of bleeding - and a few days after the bleeding. Give it a few days, if she spots, that's the issue - if not, take her to the vet.

It sounds like she's in heat. That's normal behavior for her and your nuetered male. Are you going to spay her in the near future? So you don't need to worry about the incident.
