My boyfriend and I have been dating for 4 years now and in this time period we both have had unsteady jobs so we haven't gotten engaged because we neededsomething steady.

It's been a few months now and we both have steady jobs and he's getting a regular paycheck but wants to buy a nice TV (which we already have) or other things which we really don't need. Meanwhile I'm thinking...you should probably buy a ring or something for me...we're finally at that point we've discussed where we'd want to start our lives together but he hasn't gotten the hint of BUY A RING with that money. His first thought tends to be anything technological. Any advise?

You two have fallen into a rut.

He has fallen in love with being marketed to, via the TV and other technology sources. To wean him away (and keep him away) from these high tech influences, you must work on building a life.

First, ban all new purchases on the reason of CLUTTER. No home can take infinite amounts of big screens, game consoles, DVD players, and the like. No garage can accommodate several cars, motorcycles, scooters, and other vehicular additions, and too many tools is too many tools.

Make plans to go to museums, wine tastings, jazz trio performances, WHATEVER, in the evenings after work. Go camping, prospecting for gold, swimming at the beach, antiques hunting, or helping at homeless shelters on the weekends. Do SOMETHING that doesn't involve sitting on the buttocks in front of a screen, and limit screen time to less than one hour per day.

Otherwise, even if you DO get a ring eventually (after he's purchased lots more electronic toys) it will be worthless because he will be a boring couch potato and you will be a frustrated witch.
