well my partner just baught a used jeep cherokee 95 and the "shifter".. thats what i call it .. well its messed up and he wants to get a new one... the only problem is that we dont know the proper name for it... so any help would be great!..
It is the thing located in the middle of the driver and passenger and you move it from park to drive and reverse and more..

The button gets stuck and is hard to get it back out...

Gear shift lever.
This could be an easy fix or a major problem. There should be an allen screw at the bottom of the lever. Loosen it and remove the shifter.
If it shifts OK by just pushing the exposed button, the lever could've been mis-adjusted or bad. Put it back on and see if you can adjust it so the button pushes easier.
If the button still is difficult to push down with the lever off, you may have linkage or tranny problems.

what is wrong with it? if it moves but doesn't shift you could need a new transmission, (expensive) or it could just be a broken shift linkage (pretty cheap).
