You and your boyfriend shouldn't be using credit cards at fancy restaurants. If you can't afford it, don't eat there.

Yes, it is legal. He bought food and service that he could not pay for. Washing dishes is an old means of getting payment from diners who cannot pay. Restaurants have been doing if for decades (probably longer).
But, why are you scared? The issue should be resolved now and his debt is paid. There is absolutely no need to fear anything from the restaurant. Is the restaurant what you fear? Or are you afraid of your boyfriend? I am not sure why you are scared.

What were they suppose to do, let him walk out without paying for his meal? If his card was declined and he had no other payment options, then, yes, I would say it was perfectly legal and a reasonable solution.

scared? of what? so what, he should have had money on his Credit Card if he was taking you out to a fancy dinner!! you should lose the guy and find a real man that won't try to Charge his CREDIT CARD for dinner with you!!
i dunno if it's legal ... but it definitely isn't CUTE!! try to stay on his side though... saying that is ridiculous, something must be wrong with your C. Card machine, blah blah blah,
I guess I can understand a man trying to take his woman out to dinner... just next time, ask him to be a little more prepared.

No, it's not legal. It's call "indentured servitude" and he can sue! Contact a good lawyer.
And get a new boyfriend. He obviously doesn't have enough money to treat you right!

Maybe he was just over his limit, or the magnetic strip was damaged. No big deal.
