dont worry it doesnt make sense to them either. they just pretend it does. thats part of being brainwashed. you think you understand more then you really do. fail to come to terms with reality.
most likely they will tell you that you have to believe in order to understand.
edit: i gotta ask how i get so many thumbs down when not a single answer on the board defines the holy spirit. *shrug* i guess my answer is proven with these pathetic answers.

God said He would send us the Holy Spirit to help us and guide us into all truth. We accept the Holy Spirit by Faith. Jesus said, there is the Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit and that these three are One. He is the very essence of Christ, hence a Spirit. We do not see him but he is there interceding for us always, on behalf of Christ. I can understand how this might seem confusing to you. You know when you have received the Holy Spirit because you feel an immense peace and joy within. It's hard to describe. I am certain other Christians have felt this power.

To have the Holy Spirit as our "Paraclete" is to have God Himself indwelling us as believers. He teaches us the Word and guides us into the truth of that Word. He also reminds us of what He has taught us so that we can depend on God's Word in the difficult times of life. The Spirit uses the Word to give us His peace (John 14:27), His love (John 15:9, 10), and His joy (John 15:11). These are profound truths that comfort our hearts and minds in a troubled world. The power of this indwelling "paraclete" gives us the ability to "live by the Spirit so that we will not gratify the desires of the sinful flesh" and "Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit (Galatians 5:16, 25). We, then, can have the "fruit of the Spirit" produced in our own lives (Galatians 5:22, 23) to the glory of God the Father. What a blessing to have the Holy Spirit in our lives as our "paraclete," our Comforter, our Encourager, our Counselor, and our Advocate. Thank you, Father, for your wonderful gift!

The Holy Spirit is best described as the presence of God on earth. If you have ever felt the presence of God within you or working in your life, then you were moved by the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is also the giver of gifts. Each of us has different talents or gifts, and they come from the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit helps us to determine what our gifts are, and how we should best use them.
The Holy Spirit is often represented as a dove or a flame, and can be referred to as either male or female. Many people believe that the Holy Spirit represents the feminine attributes of God, such as nurture, care, and comfort.

Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost is the same. The Third personage in Trinity. No physical body only spirit.
The Holy Spirit cannot be in different places at the same time. But the influence is spread all over the creation. Like the sun. There is only one sun but it shines to different places.
The Testifier of truth.
The Comforter.
The Revelator.

By definition:
"Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost [ghost, i.e., spirit, a translation of Gr. pneuma=breath, air], in Christian doctrine, the third person of the Trinity. The Holy Spirit is sometimes defined as the aspect of God immanent in this world, in human beings, and in the church. Jesus' promise to his disciples of a Comforter (or Paraclete, i.e., advocate), in John 14, is considered his principal reference to the Holy Spirit, and the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles and the communication of the gift of tongues, as recounted in Acts 2, is thought to be an example of the work of the Holy Spirit in time. This incident is commemorated on Pentecost (Whitsunday). Certain Christian groups, such as the Montanists and the Society of Friends, have attributed utterances of their members to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The dove is the symbol of the Holy Spirit." (Columbia Encyclopedia)

The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Godhead. God describes Himself in scripture as God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. All three are ONE, but manifest themselves in different ways.
It would be like a man being a husband, a son, and a father, but still being ONE man.
God doesnt tell us that we will understand this concept, but that we should believe what He tells us about Himself. He finds Himself in the position that we would be in if we tried to explain the unexplainable to an ant colony. Picture yourself becoming an ant to go and save them from a future calamity. There are things you would try to explain to them that they simply are incapable of understanding, so you give them the simplest explanation and tell them to simply believe and trust you.
This is the position God is in, although He has done a very good job of describing Himself, His person, how He feels and thinks and what His plans and purposes ARE for this world, the people IN it, and for coming attractions. All this information is found IN THE BIBLE....still a "best seller."

If you don't have a conscience of your own then you can use the holy spirit. Christians need some one to tell them right from wrong. They can't figure that out for themselves. The holy spirit is as good a conscience as anything.

Jesus was with us here on earth, but He was not able to be in many places because He gave up some of His Godly qualities when He came to be human.
However, the Holy Spirit of God is everywhere.

The Holy Spirit is the third part of the Trinity: God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the counselor sent to us by Jesus after the resurrection. The Holy Spirit helps us pray when we don't know what to say.
