Not all Christians, when a Christian says god loves you and in the same breath explains that if you don't bow your head you will go to hell he has earned the right to get an annoyed snap back.
Whenever religion is mentioned in the news it is because some guy is shouting about persecution, the evil of anyone not following his own beliefs, and that anything bad happening in the world (Katrina, tsunami, 9/11...) is a punishment from god and those people deserved it...
Bad press for the other 90% of Christianity.

What society do you live in? Here in the US, Christians mention God all the time with impunity.
Christianity isn't all "love and good will toward men".
You can have "love and good will toward men" without Christianity. Its also been plainly demonstrated that many Christians don't practice "love and good will toward men" at all.
People that dislike Christianity usually dislike it because right-wing Christian fundamentalists and evangelicals are actively trying to take over as many government positions as they can, in hopes of re-writing US laws and policies according to their superstitions.
Christian extremists are doing incredibly stupid and horrid things such as trying to force school systems to teach asinine lies such as "Intelligent Design" and "Abstinence-Based Sexual Education". They have also interfered in scientific research that could cure many awful diseases.
Society isn't nearly as hostile to Christianity as it should be.
Its pathetic that Christians can believe that they are "persecuted" for speaking "God's truth" when it is blatantly obvious that the only reason anyone ever says anything against them is because they are ignorant, superstitious, obnoxious twits who are trying to control the lives of other people and force their ridiculous lies on everybody by writing them into the nation's laws.
Also, if you quote from the Bible and expect these quotes to be accepted as some sort of authority, it only makes sense that non-Christians would say you are an idiot. Why would any non-Christian see any quote from the Bible as meaningful in any way? That would be like someone trying to debate on a point of law in the US by talking about the laws in Iran. The information just doesn’t apply in any realistic fashion. People that don’t believe in your religion will see what you are saying as no better than trying to prove a point by quoting from fairy tales.

Popular culture finds and uses the most absurd, fringe examples of Christianity to define Christianity. Therefore, many only know this bizarre view of Christianity. If you doubt me, look at some of the answers to this question. They think Christianity is all about hating Harry Potter? Where did they get this notion if not from the media and popular culture?
What is the agenda that would cause many in popular culture to define all Christianity by the fringe elements? Why are so many so willing to believe this view?

I think it's mainly a backlash against Christianity being the "accepted religion" in America for so long.
Also, Christians believe the Bible is the inerrant word of God, and that therein lies its value for instruction and guidance. However, non-Christians do not believe this, and find it to be no more meaningful to their lives than the latest Dr. Phil book.

There are a lot of interesting ideas in the above answers.
tebone0315, Shae, CJ, 777, mike, and D.A. S say that it should be expected because Jesus is the truth, and 'if you follow me, all will hate you'.
Chippy claims that it's because many Christians leave the little political correctness box and protest the evil things going on around them (abortion being a chief one, in my mind - or do you think Jesus was "alright" with murder?).
Meanwhile, on a lower level, GlitterSno75, Aaron, and keoh6 propose that it's because some Christians overstep their bounds and ridicule others. This is partly true, and should a person find themselves doing this, they need to pray about it. Pride is to be avoided, and no man is better than any other man.
Deke, Evan, OPad, Snark!, and Matt J propose that you (and the victims you refer to) are being melodramatic. There might be a grain of truth in this. Look into 'Voice of the Martyrs', a website that posts information about downtrodden Christians all over the world, in despotic countries like North Korea and China. These are the real victims, and we in civilized countries should consider ourselves lucky.
Paien, the Children's Crusade was 800 years ago.
i-c-u's got an interesting idea. I guess.
Catholic Crusader, Sophia, EverMom's Garden, and didi all have similar ideas. From what I've personally observed, it looks like atheism is "cool" nowadays. Maybe both sides need to work on tolerance (though not necessarily acceptance) of each other.
I'm thinking Lucan is being sarcastic, so I'll use this space to plug Ron Paul for president in 2008.
Robert, you're absolutely wrong. Google 'apologetics' and you'll find tons of websites with resources for Christians wanting to defend their religion. Know why? Because we're challenged on it constantly. If you even wear a cross necklace, people tend to get either genuinely curious or mean-spirited and snide. I'm not saying that this is 'persecution', and that it's actually fair.
Ares and Daughter think that it's because you open your mouth. I think you already know what to say to people like that.
Megadave accuses Bible-believing Christians of being bigots. According to our religion, if you're not saved, you're going to Hell. It might not be "polite" or even "nice", but it's the truth. If a person doesn't believe in Hell, it shouldn't bother them that we're afraid for their soul.
Azure Z's post was a diatribe. I'm ignoring it.
My suggestion to Lavendersmile is: Look into apologetics (carm.org is a good place to start, and grab the program from e-Sword.net). Get strong in the Bible and learn how to justify yourself to others. Of course, never be afraid to say, "I'm not sure. I'll have to ask my pastor." When people see that you're an educated Christian, their admiration for you (and hence, the religion you defend) will grow.

It is Christianity, per se that is being ridiculed. It is the fact that you guys are trying to legislate your beliefs and force them on everybody else.
I'm an agnostic and I don't believe in Christianity. I am definately a second class citizen here. I can't believe you guys would dare to talk about oppression here. Try walking in my shoes! You tell people you're a CHristian, and they'll leave you be. Tell them you're anything but and suddenly they expect you to defend your beliefs on the spot.
Do you have to justify your beliefs when you tell people your a Christian? I thought not. The oppression of CHristians in this country is a lie.

Because we are not of this world. They hate the Lord Jesus Christ and everything to do with him. Some can not even say his name they say "Xtians" or "xmas". Some will use "g-d". The spirit it them does not bare witness with the spirit of the Lord.
John 17:14
I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
John 15:25
But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.
Matthew 10:22
And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.
Matthew 24:9
Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.
Mark 13:13
And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
Luke 21:17
And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake.
John 15:18
If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.

Which society did you have in mind? American? Indeed, there's no way such an atheistic country could ever elect a Born Again Christian to the White House, is there?

I know one big reason why: Because Institutions of Higher Learning (what a joke!) have systematically attacked Christianity and indoctrinated their minds-full-of-mush students into believing this garbage. Most of you attackers come out of a post-christian cultural situation in which blaming Christiasnity for everything is acceptable and politically correct. In fact, bigotry against Christians (and especially Catholic Christians) is one of the last acceptable prejudices in America. If you insult a homosexual or a Muslim you have commited a hate crime. Insult a Christian and you're a hero at UC Berkeley. These attacks are better proof than any other proof I know of that Christanity is the true religion: Why else would the world attack it so hard?
