The plague caused infection via two different pathways(2-respiratory, 1-insect bite).
1. Fever, painful hugely swollen lymph nodes, 30-60% ffatality.
2. Immediate weakness followed by rapid death within hours.

Read Daniel Defoe's "Journal of the Plague Years" for a contemporary description of life during the plague. Although he was only 5 years old at the time of the plague, he certainly knew older people who had survived it, and his fictionalized "diary" is thought to be accurate.

the obvious death and also the formations of buboes which were swelling of the lymph nodes over the body.

the black death was also called the bubonic plague caused by the bacteria Yersinia pestis, carried by rats~

The hygiene of the days in Europe werent good because of low sanitation and open sewage systems.
