I missed that question. It sounds to me like the asker was in a way making fun of how some "backwoods" or "southern" people talk. I would have fallen for it since I am accustomed to people who use that dialect.
Not all people are arrogant by the way. I also do not like to see people belittled unless they are being "mean", intolerant, or narrow-minded

Let's make that "Why are SOME people on this site . . ." OK?
I think we have a problem here with a new form of communication. For one thing, you can't see the person who asked the question, so you don't know if he was using hillbilly-sounding language to be mocking, and if so, why he was mocking. Then you don't see the answerers, either, so you don't know whether they are not just joining in with the spirit of joking, or whether they are offended, or whether they are simply tired of the same questions (stripped of its cute style) being asked over and over again. That's why emoticons were invented, but we don't have them available here.
My own guess is that the questioner was not religious, and the language indicated that it was meant to be mocking. I fail to see why you say that is irrelevant. And which direction is giving him "the benefit of the doubt"? To me, had I seen this question, I would have responded as it it were serious, but used a dialect myself. That is, I'd tell the truth about what I believe, but join in the joking.
Personally, I have to assume you are new here, and didn't think to check the questioner's Q&A page to see if they joke like this a lot. One clue is the fact that they did not capitalize "Lord," but then some people don't use capitals at all. This one capitalized "Paw" but not "lord," indicating it may well be a joking atheist.
Don't take joking too seriously. If people are really using outright insults, report them. That's against Community Guidelines.

When people post stupid questions, or stupidly worded questions they deserve to be answered in the same way. I won't say that it isn't cruel or sarcastic, but it is sarcasm & cruelty which is not only deserved, it is practically asked for. I am so appalled at the arrogance of some people who can't accept the way some people answer stupid questions as they should be answered. Is being so appalled at the so called "arrogance of people who seem to be so smug in their own righteousness" and mocking them the sign of decency?
Have a great day.

They're that way because the internet is faceless. They can be a totally different person behind a "wall" than in real life. I think the facelessness of the internet tends to bring out the worst in people. On the other hand, I've also seen some "faceless" angels cross my path. This is human kind we're talking about & let's face it- we're cruel & sinful by nature.
BTW, I don't get down on a person for ignorance, but I do get down on them for blatently not taking the time to write proper English. I don't mock though.

No, you are quite right. Mostly I've found people to be really nice on here... when a religious fanatic starts railing away, the atheists just seem to come together for a group yawn. When an atheist loses his temper at proselyters, the religious usually try to express their feelings about their beliefs, rather than their feelings about non-believers. But so many people on here seem to have no patience with the grammatically challenged! I know not why!

It is not a sign of decency at all. Unfortunately that is predominately what you will see here. Like politics, religion is one of the most volatile subjects there are. People have very strong opinions on both subjects. You need really thick skin to last very long in this section.

Anonyminity (probably spelled wrong) creates an avenue where people can be as obnoxious as they want to be. No one is going to find these people and punish them for their cruel, sadistic comments, so they are just using them to vent their own frustrations in life. I dont' know about that specific question, but for most of them in this section, that seems to be the case.

1) It's the internet. Anyone can say anything and hide behind a username.
2) It's Yahoo. Yahoo doesn't do much to curb unkindness.

People are sarcastic and cruel because they can hide behind the avatar and pretend to be whomever and whatever they want. There is no danger of repercussions so they say hateful things and I guess they get a charge out of it.
I don't think that most of them would ever say to someones face.
