Why do people keep claiming to be Jewish when they are not?
'Messianic Jews' are NOT Jewish. No Jew believes that Jesus was the Messiah. Judaism and Christianity are mutually exclusive: you can't be both!
I have nothing whatsoever against 'messianic jews'. I just wish they would stop masquerading as Jewish when clearly they are not. I would NEVER dream of trying to tell Christians how to define members of their religion. So why do 'messianic jews' feel they can do precisely this with Judaism?

Your wife may be 'jewish' by her own definition but she is not Jewish according to the Jewish texts, the Jewish laws, and all else that Judaism teaches.

Jesus was Jewish; he was born a Jew and he died a Jew when the Romans crucified him. Christianity did not develop until after his death.

JANA 11 - the minute a person accepts Jesus as the messiah, they are not Jewish. It really is as simple as that. Could you be Christian and worship Allah? No? Same logic applies.

MAMMABECKI - alas, you have entirely missed my point! Yes, there was a belief that a messiah would come - but for Jews, he still has not arrived! Judaism states that when the real messiah appears, we will know because certain conditions will have been met - such as peace on earth.
No Jew believes that Jesus was the messiah.
I ask you: can a Christian worship Allah? No? Same logic applies. No Jew believes in Jesus as messiah.

You're completely right. They can believe whatever they want as long as they keep it within themselves. I wouldn't have a problem normally but what they do is only pretend to be something in order to fool other people into making decisions they wouldn't normally make. These people are pretenders and liars and not Jews. Judaism is not a race. You cannot be a Xian Jew. There is no such thing. It's very simple.

Reading through the responses I have notices varying degrees of understanding concerning this issue. First off, let me say that Jewish Law (halacha) defines a person as a Jew or non-Jew. All of the above opinion are irrelevant. Jewish law states that a person born of a Jewish mother is a Jew or a personal who converted is a Jew. Jewish Law states plainly that one cannot change their status as a Jew. If this was the case then all Jews outside of Orthodoxy would not be considered Jewish since in practice they are not entirely observant. If a Jew is an atheist, Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, agnostic, etc., they are still a Jew. Therefore if a Jew chooses to attend a Messianic congregation they are still a Jew according to Jewish Law, however, the presence of Jews in a group does not mean that what they are doing is "Jewish."
The question of Jesus being a Jew is clear as well. Yes, he was a Jew and was one of "many" roaming teachers in ancient Judea. However, the Jesus taught in Christianity and in the Messianic movements is not the same Jesus of two millennial ago. Today's Jesus is a myth, which has evolved over the centuries.

Not all Messianic Jewish believers pretend to be jewish. I have been Messianic for 2 years now. We dont try to convert Jews at all. We are Christians who study hebraic roots. The scriptures are more easily understood when you understand the meanings of some of the things said.
The common belief is that Romans 8:11 I believe says that we are grafted in......
In the end times, many will face persecution for their faith. As history usually repeats itself, I believe all Jews will face persecutions again, and any other group that do as the jews do will be persecuted along with them. This would include sabbath keepers, feast keepers etc.

To answer your question I must pose a question;
1. If a person keeps Shabbat, keeps Torah and was born to a mother who was Jewish, would you deny that this person was Jewish even if they professed a faith different from yours?
2. If this same person was an agnostic or atheist, would you still deny that they were Jewish?
Your use of the term “Christian” is slightly askew, since it is not possible to be born a Christian, yet it is possible to be born Jewish.
As such, would you deny that Messianics who keep the festivals, keep Shabbat, Passover and Hanukah, while not observing Christmas or Easter, would these individuals likewise not also be considered Jewish?
You have obviously learned to parrot the beliefs of others. I would challenge you to read in the TANAKH, that verse in Proverbs, Chapter 30, verse 4 –
Who has ascended heaven and come down?
Who has gathered up the wind in the hollow of his hand?
Who has wrapped the waters in his garment?
Who has established all the extremities of the earth?
What is his name, or his son’s name, if you know it?

I agree with you on that Tabatha.
The jews for jesus or "messianic jew" thing was started by a christian minister, who else?
The purpouse is quite blunt to make jews into christians but they play it down by still calling them jews ie messianic jews or jews for jesus.
It is a subtle way of conversion and i can't beleive how many jews subscribe to this "title".
It is ridiculouse, Jesus was not the messiah that was prohesied to the jews. According to the jewish faith and correct me if im wrong the messiah has yet to come and jesus was not him because he did not stop the persecution of the jews?
Im just curious tabatah and i would expect you know this what are the "messianic jews" status in Israel? How do Israeli's regarde them especiall the government?
And to Aussie no jesus was not the messiah, thus jews do not worship him. Anybody who worships christ is a christ-tian notice the root of the word Christ not jew.
And at christianties inception, the relegion called christianity was atfirst a mere sect to of judaism not a full blown relegion, to clear that up.
Please aussie why should i accept what you say as credible when you have very little respect for others faiths.
You who once said Muslims worship a moon god.

There is a certain amount of either misunderstanding or plain lack of history going on here !
Who do you think Jesus & his disciples preached to ?
The first converts came from the Jews & the Christian Church was formed after the death & resurrection of Christ. In the modern era , the Messianic jews are those who still hold true to their Jewish traditions , worship the same God but have accepted that Jesus is who he said he is !
What is the problem! Does that offend you ?
Jesus challenges each of us to change , to love , to accept his grace !
I see no evidence of grace here , just doctrinal bigotry !
Who are you to dictate truth ?
It may interest you to know that many Christians celebrate passover & have a keen interest in the history of the Jewish nation ...it is totally logical as it is part of our historical inheritance....so please don't be offended just because you can't accept .
edit 1....Now ,now people ....what is the record for thumbs down with no thumbs up ? lol
edit 2. By the way , William B even has his " facts " wrong ! The New Testament was written in the period immediately following the crucifiction & resurrection of Jesus , the main authors being his closest disciples who actually ministered with him & Paul ( previously Saul of Tarsus ) a noted Jewish scholar of his day &, previous to his conversion , a persecutor of the early Christian Church !

Lets clarify a few things. Being Jewish is a race and a religion.
You cannot be a Jew (religion) and believe in Jesus as the Son of God.
You can be culturally Jewish but Christian in religion.
Messianic Judaism is Christianity under another name.

How can someone lose there blood? That's what your saying a Jewish person is a person that is a direct descendant of Abraham you can't take that out of the blood. It's really strange a Jewish person can be a Muslim, atheist any other religion but they lose there blood when they accept Yeshua (Jesus) as there messiah. How is that possible

judaism is not a race; there are jews of every race.
judaism is not an ethnicity; there are jews in many different ethnic groups.
tabatha is, as usual, correct. you cannot believe that jesus was the savior and be jewish.
you can't even believe that you need to be saved, that salvation is necessary because of sin or hell or whatever. that is a christian idea, not a jewish one.
during the lincoln-douglas debates, douglas asked lincoln "if you have a dog, and you call the tail a leg, how many legs does it have?"
lincoln answered "it still has 4 legs, just because you call it a leg doesn't make it one."
it's the same thing.
yes, jesus was jewish, and preached judaism. his followers didn't, the religion that was invented after his death didn't, but jesus was nothing but jewish. if you really want to follow him, you should be jewish, not christian. do what you want, of course. but you can't be both.
christians, i ask you this. if it told you i didn't believe in jesus, didn't believe i need to be be saved, didn't believe he died for my sins, none of that, but still i like to call myself christian, what would you say? would you say i can be a christian if i don't believe in christ? no, you would say i'm not a christian if i don't believe in christ.
it's the same thing. if you DO believe in christ, you are not jewish, it's that simple. i don't care how much chicken soup you eat.
and i'd be happy to tell that to anyone's face. if i'm really annoyed with anyone that was born jewish and now is christian, but calls themselves a messianic jew or whatever, i might remind them of their relatives that died in the holocaust, and how they must be ashamed. but hopefully i wouldn't say that.

I understand what you are saying: but if I could plz ask, you said that Christians came after Jesus died, but I read that Jesus would preach to people on hills, under trees, etc. Who was he preaching to? Who were the people at that time that followed him? If Christians did not come until after he died, was he preaching to Jews or...? Thanx for your information in advance.
@Daniel: wowowow I suggest you see this site: being Jewish is not a race dear,
