My last pap smear from April came back abnormal and I tested positive for HPV. I'm going back to have a second test done next friday as a 6 month follow up. I am so nervous. HPV causes cancer and because my pap test was abnormal does that mean I'm going to get cancer????

HPV infection is a condition contracted from one of a group of more than 100 related human papillomaviruses (HPVs).

Each type of HPV has the potential to cause an abnormal growth on a particular part of your body — genital warts and other lesions on or near your genitals or anus. Human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection, play a role in causing most cases of cervical cancer.

HPV infection can cause cancer of the cervix, the narrow outlet of the uterus. Other HPV infections may cause other cancers of the genitals, anus, mouth or throat. However, not all infections with these dangerous types lead to cancer.

Please do not worry and go through the Pap smear test and have the treatments in full, if cancer is detected. Best of Luck-

HPV has different risk levels and having contracted HPV does not mean you will get cancer. Follow your doctors advice. You can get more information on HPV at several sources club462 has a safer sex room with a professional from an STD Clinic, who can answer your question or point you in the right direction. The CDC and Asha are also loaded with great information. Several places also have support groups for people with HPV, I believe club462 has one as well.

No. It just means you need to be very committed to getting your Pap smears as the doctor recommends. Some women with HPV get cervical cancer, but lots and lots of women with it don't. Here's a good website: http://www.thehpvtest.com/ As you will see, most HPV goes away on its own.

HPV puts a higher likability of getting cancer. But, its not a sure thing an they do have the vaccine now available. My wife was told the same turned out to be nothing.

You can't get a diagnoses on here. Don't worry so much, you'll be just fine. We tend to freak ourselves out when a test comes back abnormal, only to find out it's curable. You'll be OK!! Do anything to keep your mind off of it. Don't do anymore research on the PC it will drive you nuts... trust me, I've been there, only to find out I stressed myself out for nothing! Take care Hun!
