You do need the HD /Digital Cable box upgrade, & you get the programming listed in this link :

3) Do I need to switch my whole Comcast plan just to get a few HD channels? Yes comcast has a HD plan and you need the HD cable box. Then you need to connect using the HDMI cable to the TV
4) How many HD channels am I getting? I get about 20 thru comcast and the pic is awesome
5) Is this really worth doing all this? Or is this just an easy thing to do? Its easy. If you spent the money on the TV, might as well enjoy it. The pic will blow you away.

You need hdmi cables for your hdtv. About $30-$50, but unfortunately you cannot experience hd channels, hd movies without them. Contact Comcast to find out how subscribe to hd channels.

If you want HD channels you will have to upgrade to HD service. So yes you will have to switch your plan to one that includes HD.

OR ... if you are close enough to local broadcasters you can use an HDTV antenna.

But this will only give you the local stations. If you want ESPN HD or Discovery HD you will have to subscribe.
