I'm 38 and female. I went to my gp last week with pain in my lower left pelvic area and they said I had a urinary tract infection.

Now a week later my symptoms aren't any better and the pain is pretty much my lower left side and up into my left side where the waist of your pants sit and also lower back pain on the left side. Pain is worse while sitting.

Now I'm afraid because the dr said he wanted me to come back in today - it could be a kidney stone. I've heard those are just horribly painful. While I'm certainly uncomfortable, it's not excruciating.

If you've had a kidney stone - does this sound like the symptoms you had?

It's possible. My pain started with what I thought was just an ovary twinge, but then it spread to my lower back.

If you do have a stone, it sounds like it's already out of the kidney, and when it first comes out seems to be the most painful time. So you're probably lucky.

I've had kidney stones and they are painful. How painful? I gave birth naturally to 9 lb and 9.7 lb babies and I'd way rather do that again.

The first kidney stone was the worst. It was the size of a lima bean. I didn't know what was going on. Just woke up in the middle of the night with extreme pain in my lower, right abdominal area. I tried all the different positions I used during labor and nothing worked. I threw up from the pain and finally asked my husband to take me to ER. They spent a couple hours poking and prodding me and finally gave me morphine. Yeah for morphine. After a CAT scan, they saw multiple stones in my kidney, but the lima bean in my ureter (tube from the kidney to the bladder) was what was causing the pain. The ones in the kidney can stay there and not cause problems.

I was scheduled to have it blasted, but it passed on it's own before. (That was more of a searing, burning pain)

I've now passed several and find the first day is the worst. I usually have really bad pain in my lower back area when they come out of the kidney. The rest of the pain is not so bad. If you do have a stone, I'd say you are past the worst of it, so relax and drink a lot of water.

Kidney stones will also be detrimental, my query is why did she now not cross to the sanatorium and feature them eliminated? I acquired kidney stones final August, and had surgical procedure to have them eliminated. It would possibly not be deadly, however I do not appreciate how she might have stood them very lengthy, mine have been highly painful and I used to be peeing blood...She will undoubtedly get well, however it takes a couple of days to consider again to typical and she or he might need to put on a catheter for a couple of days as good. Best of success to her.

My husband gets kidney stones fairly often and although they are no fun, he says he would rather have stones than my medical condition-- irritable bowel syndrome. Anyway, yes they are very painful, but my husband always gets lots of painkillers. The ER is always very helpful-- last time we were there he got IV morphine and then they sent him home with oxycontin or percoset. Afterward, he always goes to his urologist who will then give him more painkillers if he needs them. My point is that while untreated stones ARE very painful, in our experience the doctors have always been very sympathetic and do all they can to help him cope. Good luck!
