There is a drop right from the top into the hallway beneath, should I try to block it off or will they know not to jump?

Get some sheets of thin plywood and block it with that or even use garden netting. Cheap and effective temporary measure.

Kittens get reall distracted playing and attacking and rolling around, etc. and are notorious for not watching what's underneath them. They probably wouldn't jump on purpose, but accidentally while they're playing is very possible. So I advise putting a heavy blanket over the railings.

My nephew was telling me that the anatomy of a cat is such that when they spread all four appendages out, there's some extra skin and it acts like a parachute. That's why they don't get hurt dropping from 4 story buildings, etc.

Kitties are SO much fun!

My kitty is 6, but she still jumps 4-5' into the air to try to catch a toy on a fishing pole.

This may sound uncaring, but cats and kittens aren't as dumb as some people may think. Since there are spindles, they won't be pushed while playing very easily. There is always a chance, but I have faith in the smartness of the kittens that probably nothing will happen.

well i would suggest you buy like a baby blocker and just put it there. they might be able to climb up it but i think that once they see that you are trying to stop them they will try harder to climb it to see what it is. once they figure out it could be dangerous they will probably leave it alone. but if you're worried about them falling after they climb the baby blocker thing then keep a squirt bottle near, so that if you see them climbing on it you can squirt them. and since cats don't like water they will leave it alone after a squirt or two. hope this helps!

Cats are pretty good about not making long drops like you describe. But if you're worried, confine them in a room with a baby gate: That's what my mother did with a pair of kittens before my husband and I took them home.

For a more appealing look use bumpers for a crib you may need to buy two or three to go high enough. These can be purchased at a goodwill if you need to save money.
