Okay... I know some of you guys have a rule about "taking the name of the Lord in vain, but is "God" really the name of the Lord? I mean, it could be Odin, Zeus, Ra, Jehova, Lugh or YHWH being referred to when someone says "God," because whether or not anyone likes it, the word God does not refer ONLY to YHWH / Jehova. So if someone who doesn't believe in the Abrahamaic deity uses the word godd-mn, are they not blaspheming their OWN deity and not yours?
Do you think the word "God" is at all "holy"? I believe in a deity, but the word "God" means next to nothing to me. If I am actually going for reverence, I can't use the word God because it is simply too mundane.
Your thoughts?

I agree with you completely. God is not a name it is a title. Just like Deity is not a name it is a title. Personally, I don't believe that God has a real name. A name is something that others give to us to distinguish us from our peers. God (at least the Abrahamic God) has no peers and therefore has no need for a name. God simply...."is" (which is what is meant by the phrase "I am who I am"). Of course, humans have given God many names for convenience sake. We've given God a pronoun (he) and we for some odd reason get offended when someone uses a name other than the one we were raised to accept as his name. And we get even more offended when someone speaks ill of that name we've accepted. Is the name holy? Of course not. It's man-made. Should we respect the name? Not really. It's just a pointer. Respect God, not the sign pointing to him.

You are correct there are many name that the true God has even used to describe Himself.. Each one when used in that way is Holy.. I can think of a few more of those.. Wonderful, Counciler, The might God, the Prince of Peace.. If you wish to use a name of a God in vain.. go ahead use Odin, Zeus, Ra.. knock yourself out... IHS Jim

You are correct, and it's something i never recognized. But lots of times when i say "God" (or type it) i am trying NOT to refer specifically to the Father of Jesus.
Also, in the Jewish tradition, the actual name derived from Yod-Heh-Vov-Heh is not to be pronounced because it is so holy. I have seen it spelled out here as "Yahweh" for the Jewish version, and that's the one You don't say. It is also interpreted as Jehovah and Allah, all three names from the Tetragrammaton. Saying "God" sort of lets me off the hook for blaspheming any of those proper names, but i prefer to be in control of my mouth and NOT say "--damn" anything at any time.
When i show reverence in my prayers, i usually address "Father."

The name of the LORD is not really known as the hebrew YHWH had no vowelization yet.
However, I believe its the intent and whats in your heart that counts, not the actual word

The word "god" is negative to too many people, mainly conguring up the image of the evil, vengeful "god" of the Old Testament and other religions that originated in the mideast. I prefer to use alternate spellings and labels for the divine.

In quest for understanding, let's break down the meaning. A child's father's name is Edward but the child calls him 'Dad'. The father commands that the child not use Dad's name in vain. What constitutes intentional disobediance? That the child says I hate Edward? Or Damn Edward? Help me, Edward? Or Edward allows me to break that law so I am not accountable? Edward defines what is allowed; it is for him and only him to judge.

Indeed, let's see what's in a name...
Grace unto you, and peace,
from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Jehovah, Yaweh, Allah, G-d...God on high?
These are the awful lawful things: horeb-bull.
The name:
- of God our Father in heaven, and
- of Jesus Christ our Lord, and
- by which ye are called to come, is
Grace: it's above every name named,
such as God(high), Jesus(lower), cancer, and death.
Hallowed be THY name: GRACE
The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.
