Well, those are two different jobs.
The duties of a police officer are to deter crime by patrolling an area, by investigating crime reports, and by apprehending criminal suspects.
The duty of a corrections officer is to ensure that persons in detention are safely and securely detained. "Safely detained" means that their basic needs, such as food, water, protection from the elements (and sometimes, protection from each other!) are met.
