A bird appears to have nested in my garage. I left food crumbs in there so it does not starve, and left the garage open for a day, but it did not leave. Any suggestions on getting the bird to leave for a more suitable living arrangement?

I would help if we knew the type of bird. Just try to describe it if you are able to add to your question.

As for getting him out, it's probably a good idea to see if he can fly. It it doesn't look like it, it might be best to take him to a local vet or wildlife rehabilitation centre. Placing a towel over the bird and then picking him up and into a box would be the best method for this.

If the bird appears to be able to fly and walk you may be better off leaving it there.

You said you think it's nesting. If this is the case and it has a nest there it might be a better idea to leave it to raise its young before bird proofing the area if you don't want this to happen again. Check for signs such as nesting materials, eggs/chicks (where possible, as in, if the bird moves from the nest). It could be that the bird is merely injured and retreated there for safety.

That's about all I can think of without a description of the bird itself and any other information as I have mentioned about nesting etc.

Just make sure it can get in and out alright. We had barn swallows living in our garage and left a small window open for them. They finally moved on after the baby birds learned to fly.

Your garage seems to suit the bird just fine. I agree that he probably comes & goes via a different route than the door.

Chances are it did not get in there thru the open door. Most likely thru the soffits or under the eaves. And it nested(which means it has built a home. It can live there, it has decided.

Put some steel wool in the place where your bird is nesting, that usually helps to keep them out.
