I live in England and dogmatic Christians are rarely a problem here, I haven't been approached by Christians for the purpose of conversion no more than 3 times in my life(politley compared to what is described often), and I have never met anyone in denial of Evolution or science living in this country.
I do not feel relieved by this, because I was not always aware of the problems some American Christians have reconciling scientific discovery with religion. I actually feel upset by this problem. In our country which is officially Christian there is little or no compulsion towards religion, I think religous freedom is here, it doesn't need laws to protect it because it is a given rite. I was raised by a Christian family, and went to Christian Schools, when I had doubts I was never reprimanded for them. I ended up turning away from Christianity without losing anything or experiencing any hardship.
I am now a Deist, that believes Secular humanism is the best way to live MY life. I don't feel good because some people have little difficulty with religion and science I feel bad because there are people that do have this problem.
As for helping the people that do deny some areas of Science because of their literal interpretation of the Bible, I do not think they can be helped directly in this the information age. We are living in a time when information is more freely availiable then ever before. If I want to read about anything I can to further educate or better myself.
There is a saying that strongly applies to the people having this problem "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink". These people are all at the waters edge looking in but they see things they don't like lurking in the water, they will not drink from it even though it's right there. Some of them will think they can reverse this analogy and will laugh this off as miss informed.

Science will never disprove the non-existence of god because there is nothing to disprove. Religion will never prove the existence of something that doesn't exist.
Religion no more explains why than science does, but at least science relies on proof and evidence rather than blind faith.
It is religion that adheres rigidly to metaphor and dogma. Those with the most enquiring minds tend to be scientists of one kind or another.

No-one can open up a closed mind but the person themselves.
I cant force someone else to think. But i can live a life that will make them wonder, or even want what i have got.
My life should show others that God is real and His love and power should be evident in the way i live and how i treat others.

Strangely (Prissi P) - the sequence of events given in Gen 1 re the creation of the earth - from waters up to creation of man follow the evolutionary order to a strong degree. Also - day ( IE 7 seven days ) in old Hebrew could suggest a more poetic period of time... (given that the Sun is our measure of a day... check out when the Sun was created).
May I wax philosophically - given that Science constantly searches to find truth by measurement of the physical.
- and Theology / religion explores the measurement of the spiritual in order to find the truth.
- then perhaps they may one great day discover the full truth together!
As it is God only knows there is no scientific reason to bash each other at this stage :-)

well said Lindum finally common sense prevails
and also well said to Impeyan Link .people need to realise that understanding the Bible it this way does not make it any less Holy or valuable When the Arch Bishop of Canterbury found out that the American Academy schools which opened in England were teaching creationism ,he wrote a letter to Tony Blair Critisising this being taught in State schools .because he believed this teaching would hurt the Church

OK, but the argument of Evoultion is a conflict of Genesis 1, if you will read it states God created the heaven and Earth, it does not state that evolution happened.♥

Yes.
Make them work at studying the Bible in its entirety.
Tell them they are made in the Image of God not in the Image of a tape recorder.
Get out a Strong's Concordance and take these three words
Knowledge
Understanding
Wisdom
and read every entry to each one in full after first having prayed to God to open their own understanding.
They will emerge stronger, more assured and happier human beings.
LUKE 22
44And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
45Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,

Science has never explained how we are here. Theirs is just a theory. Religion can't answer that neither...but the Bible clearly tells us How and why. How...God spoke creation into being Why...We are created to Know and worship him.
