Unfortunately, my profession has become one of many that are now SALARY positions. As a computer specialist, it seems most employers want to hire you for 40 hours a week, but then they almost always want you to work more than that (for 'FREE'), because we are salary.

The employers put peer pressure on you by comparing your work ethic to others who have succumbed to their bosses pressures to work more hours, ...for FREE!!

Now this is not fair at all, and in fact seems to be an unethical work practice that should be against the U.S. Wage and Labor laws. They are just exploiting the use of 'salary' to get more FREE labor. This isn't fair. Salary should be for top management and sales force workers.

Obviously we could find another job, but most other companies are doing the same thing now days.

The only answer seems to be to find another career field, but this isn't practical either. I only want to work 40 hours a week, even at a lower pay.

What are your suggestions?

1. See if you can transfer into an hourly position at your current employer;
2. Send out resumes for other positions at other companies;
3. Complain to your state's labor board that you are improperly classified as exempt;
4. Complain to the federal labor board - Department of Labor - that you are improperly classified as exempt.

There are jobs out there. They are few but they are there. I am also in the Information Technology sector and have decided to seek a career change for the very same reasons you've stated. I just don't have that kind of drive anymore. When I first graduated from college, that kind of schedule was fine, but now, I am realizing that I really want to appreciate life's little moments and that I don't cope well with that level of stress. I am currently pursuing the career coaching profession and I am having some success. Find what you enjoy and turn it into a paycheck. It might take some time, but it's possible. If you can afford a career coach, I recommend hiring one to help you find what you are good at and what you enjoy doing.

If your salary is based on 40 hour work week and the company is constantly requesting additional hours, then you should complain to the labor board. Many salary wages are based on 45 hours, because that is what many employers expects on average from a salaried employee.
