some people need some form of spirituality.

spiritual doesn't neccessarily mean godly. i interpret it as an altered state of mind like hypnosis or meditation.

ancient man gazed into the embers of their fires or into the heavens and imagined a deeper meaning to existence. This is the birth of spiritual thinking. We still want to picture something bigger than ourselves, a deeper meaning as to why we're here and our purpose. I think it is a natural inclination and I agree with you that it's not necessarily based in belief of deity.

People need something to believe in. It's a matter of picking the right thing.

Everyone says this right down the line, even Atheists. You have to pick the right thing.

There are wrong things and there are right things. Even Atheists agree on this. God, for example, is a wrong thing no God is a right thing.

According to the Atheists if you believe in God you are wrong, sinful, delusional. If you don't, then you are normal, intellegent, reality based.

So, you see, religions come out of a need to have a concrete belief system.

People need to identify themselves by ICONS or LABELS.

It makes the world nice, easy and neat.

About 99.9% of the world falls into this catagory for even those who DECLINE TO STATE are wearing a label.

I agree. I think there is something in us innate that knows to look for a higher source. I think our inveterate spiritual response to that source is worship.

You might like this quote by my favorite writer, David Foster Wallace:

.... in the day-to day trenches of adult life, there is actually no such thing as atheism. There is no such thing as not worshipping. Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship. And the compelling reason for maybe choosing some sort of god or spiritual-type thing to worship -- be it JC or Allah, bet it YHWH or the Wiccan Mother Goddess, or the Four Noble Truths, or some inviolable set of ethical principles -- is that pretty much anything else you worship will eat you alive.

Hello and blessings. Thanks for this wonderful question. Actually, people need to understand and believe that no matter what religion or school of thought we are into, we all are created by Almighty God that is revealed through the teachings of Holy Bible. Usually, people do not believe in this, still it does not change the fact. God is Spirit

So, when God created us, He also created a desire in us to know Him in a more intimate relationship.

Due to this natural desire placed in us, people follow different religions just to know Him . But, Lord Jesus Christ said that there is ONLY ONE WAY to reach and know God the Father and that is through Jesus Christ. So, if anyone really want to know what is ultimate destiny for us that would be best understood through the teachings of Lord Jesus Christ.

I would welcome any questions in this connection through instant messenger or email.

God bless you.

Religion exists only for one simple reason:

To stop people committing suicide.

In some respects... the ability to pattern together existence and achieve some semblence of simple reason has helped humanity survive more effectively and longer than other lifeforms. As with most evolutionary adaptations though, due to being randomly developed, it is quite horribly flawed in some respects..... and in this case, that same reasoning ability allows humans to voluntarily and knowingly self-terminate.

Religion exists and persists because it is counters the effects of higher reason that inevitably lead one away from the biological imperitive and more toward ways of life that do not consist primarily of survival and breeding.

Spirituality has nothing to do with it.
Humanity just needs distraction.... shiny things for them to play with to stop them from realising just how pointless and worthless life really is.

I think they are an indication of our fear of the world, even in this modern age....(typically ignorace breeds fear)

We feel as though we need someone to protect us, and since our parent's are unable to protect us from everything, we cling to a larger "father" whom is omnipotent and CAN protect us from everything, whether he be made up or real....

(just part of the equation)

No - they need to have something for their insecurity in life. They have never reached the level of mental maturity that is nescessary for a person to handle life by him/herself. Religion is a parent substiture - just more "powerful".

I think it is more of an indication that religion is a coping mechanism invented by man to deal with a fear of the unknown or unexplained.

Nah.

It is an indication that the innate state is ignorance.

Some people just choose to revel in it.
