I don't know about cough syrup, but most medicines prescribed by vets are the same ones prescribed by doctors. The only thing to really worry about is getting the dosage correct.
If your dog is coughing it could have kennel cough, and will need veterinary treatment to cure.
Edit: Am I wrong about a dog needing treatment from a vet to cure Kennel Cough?

I would pass all those types of questions to your vet. My vet will answer them over the phone. It may take a while to get a call back, but better safe than sorry.

It would scare me that your dog would even need cough medicine. That could mean it has kennel cough and should be seen by its vet.

The answer is yes, dogs can take some human medications. My dog has sever food allergies and airborne allergies. He lives on human Benadryl.

I see alot here that are the dog QA police but funny thing is they are WRONG .. Yes a dog can have human cough syrup but you need to talk to your vet to find out what one is safe and how much!! Another thing Kennel Couch can not use antibiotics if it turns into a respiratory infection then they need antibiotics BUT just to treat kennel cough antibiotics will do NO good it is a viral infection and Viral infections cannot be treated with antibiotics !! and here I thought you dog police knew it all ((haha)) so in answer to your question yes but make sure you call the vet to ask what BRAND and what DOSE !!

NO NO NO NO.
Never Ever give a dog human medicine without a vet approval as Dog digestive system is different to us. Hope this helps. Bread is okay but Garlic is toxic but found in many natural dog foods.

Human medication
Human drugs including common pain killers can cause severe complications in pets.

Please ask your veterinarian before giving your pet any human medication or drugs. Cats&dogs are are extremely sensitive to both aspirin and acetamaminophen (such as Panadol) and can be poisoned by "human" sized doses, which can lead to death.

Human medicine is normally tested on specially bred mice.

There are some human medications that are perfectlly safe to give to your dog. Cough medicine is not one of them. NO NO NO!

You can give baby aspirin, Benadryl, Pepto Bismal.

No Tylenol products-it can kill them.

Do research always before giving your cat or dog any medications. Get advice from your Vet. Obviously since you have a computer, why not do research, instead of asking some stranger who may give you bad advice??????

Why would you need to give a dog cough syrup? lol.

Human medicines that are given to dogs are anti hystemenes such as Piriton and aspirin. Piriton is ok to give in emergencies (when dog has an allergic reaction) but aspirin is usually given under the direction of the Vet.

There are probably other medications that are given across species too, but will be prescribed by the vet.

It isn't really advisable, because human meds are in different strengths to animal ones - how would you know what dosage to give that isn't going to over or under dose? Also, have you been to a vet? If not, how to do you know cough medicine is the answer? It depends what's causing the cough - if it's heart trouble for instance, cough medicine won't help.

I don't know about it, but kennel cough could be caused by a variety of infection types. Some may progress to more serious conditions, so you should probably take her to the vet. They'd be able to get you some antibiotics.
