Is there any antibiotic for dogs that I can purchase at a pet store. I have new puppy 2 days old that I rescued. His mom was very aggressive towards the litter and basically pulled the layers off of one of the puppies tails. There is nothing left but raw meat. When I talked to the vet he said it should heal on it's own. I think he has infection in it. I'm not sure if this puppy is going to survive. I wanted to see if anyone has any knowledge of an over the counter antibiotic. I feel like after the response I got from the vet, it would be a waste of time and money to take him If anyone doesn't have any suggestions I am going to take him to the vet this afternoon. From what they say, I'm not sure if it will do any good but I can't just sit around and do nothing.

I don't know anything about the mother except what animal control told me. She was surrendered while she was pregnant, had her puppies at the shelter and you know the rest of the story. The shelter called me Friday night and asked me if I would take the puppies because the mother has thrown them out of the pen. When the worker tried to put them back the mother growled at him. I know that she was an older dog. Whomever her previous owner was had no business breeding her I agree. The only thing I can do at this point is try to take care of these puppies. I am not sure what happened to the mother. As far as I know, she is still at the shelter. Thanks for all the help. I just talked to another vet and I am fixing to take the puppy to them to be looked at.

No matter what anyone says here, this poor puppy needs a vet. SHAME on whoever bred this litter. This is what happens when people breed with out a clue. The mother likely needs medical attention too. Why no mention of her? Just angry she tried to cut into the profits? Get her some help as well. Aggression towards new born pups can be caused by many things. One being life threatening eclampsia. She didn't ask for this life and did not owe anyone anything.
Unfortunate to say, this puppy will probably be better off dead as the chances of it ending up being put through the same as its mother are rather high. Very sad.

First of all, I would change Vets. Now that I have said that, I would put neosporen on the tail, and bandage the tail so the puppy cannot get it off(not too tight tho) With the puppy being so small, a large band aid would probably work. Change it every day, adding more neosporen on it. It does wonders. As for your Vet....Most of them, at least the ones I have come in contact with, have been very supportive, and helpful, and try to save lives. If the mother was pulling at the puppy, and being aggressive toward the puppy, I am afraid to say it, but the puppy may be sick. BUT you keep trying to save it. That way you will know in your heart YOU did all you could do to help this poor little puppy. I wish you the best of luck.

Take it to a different vet. You can't put anything on a newborn puppy with a vet seeing it first, you'll only make things worse. I don't think there's anything you can get at a petstore anyway. Pet stores are not permitted to sell veterinary medicines, just flea stuff and dewormers.

TAKE the puppy to another vet. They need to actually see it. There are no OTC antibiotics for a newborn puppy. The pet store has no antibiotics for dog or cats as those have to be given by a vet!!!!!!!
If you want it ot have a chance....get it to a vet.

Wow, you have taken on a big project. If you are fostering these pups for the shelter, maybe they can provide veterinary care to help you out? I agree with everyone else, pup(s) need to see the vet, I would not try to engage in do it yourself meds for anything this young and fragile. Bless you, the world needs more people like you.
