Say you met someone who says he's in the U.S. Army and you ask him what Division and he simply answers "Screaming Eagle Rangers"... What the hell does that mean?

I saw some answers that hit on it, but still not quite right. The Screaming Eagles is the 101st Airborne (Air Assault) Division. Which means they really are not Airborne in the true meaning of parachuting like they were in WWII and Viet-Nam. They use helicopters now. The Rangers part means he either served in the 75th Ranger Regiment, or like me was Ranger qualified, but never served in a Ranger Battalion. However for certain jobs in the Army you have to be Ranger qualified, such as working in a Long Range Surveillance Unit, which is a Division asset.

What it means is that he wants you to think that he is doing something that he is not. The Screaming Eagles is 101st Airborne (AA) Division. The Ranger part is the 75th Ranger Regiment or School Qualified; meaning he only went to school. The thing is, a lot of people say they are part of the Rangers or they are a Ranger. I would ask him is he a Ranger or Ranger Qualified and see what he says. The ones of us that have been serving as an Ranger that offense to people saying they are a Ranger, when really they are only Ranger Qualified.

He's in a special division of Rangers who face even more dangerous battle front line challenges than Army Rangers, an elite group only next to Green Berets.

Green Berets "plow the road clean", backed up by Screaming Eagle Rangers; Army Rangers do an impressive feat of holding the line.

Ruester is correct and I salute him for his service. I was on active duty for only 6 years in the late 60s and early 70s. Back then you had to be jump qualified to go to Ranger School (in N Ga) --- or be Special Forces --- and get your Ranger shoulder tab. Maybe not now. I don't know.

Uh - he's a Ranger. Army rangers are their own elite group in the military. They are often compared to the navy seals.
