You probably have the same type of depression I have it called disthyimia it is a rare type of depression in which med do little or nothing and you always feel depressed. and at best you feel numb sorry to say this is a life long problem if you have this type of depression but there are things you can do to help relive these symptoms like get your self a great big fluffy cat and cuddle up to him or her and do something creative like song writing or making your own clothes and don't isolate your self go out and do something fun and creative learn to play an instrument It is a prove-in fact that people with depression are more creatively gifted than any one .
you have a new friend (me) I know what your are going through and push on today to live on for another day

Honestly, I don't know if it ever goes away. But it does get better. It's been about 5 years for me and I just now am beginning to smile or laugh a bit. Not the fake kind of smile or laugh, but genuinely from the heart. I had forgotten what that feels like. Also, if you are at all creative, try writing about how you feel inside. It helps. As for the lifestyle thing, it may help in mild cases. If you try to change your lifestyle, start by changing one small thing consistently on a daily basis (i.e. a 10 minute walk every morning when you wake up). Don't set yourself up with huge changes that you may not follow through with. It's an okay idea, but those that rec commend it...have probably never had much trouble with depression. I wish you the best...

You do have to change your lifestyle to get any lasting changes. Since you have been depressed for so long, you have learned some negative ways to cope with issues and are probably stuck in a cycle of feeling sorry for yourself.
Anti-depressants will not help you in the long run. You should look at them as simply a way to get to the point where you are able to help yourself. If you go off them you will feel even worse than you did before. It's time to really look inside yourself and be honest about what you can change, little bits at a time, to make your life more positive. I recommend trying yoga, meditation, and daily walks. Getting an animal is very beneficial for people too.
Good Luck, and remember, lots of people do get better, it just takes time.

I agree with another person here - go to a therapist that practices Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and change your lifestyle a little at a time. There is a workbook by David Burns, MD that may be helpful. Another workbook is Change Your Moods or something like that. They could give you a heads up on treatment. Everything is a lifestyle change, even dieting. I know it is hard, but it can be done. Don't give up, even if you regress many times. The same thing happens to me with dieting. Also, learn some social skills, such as problem solving and assertiveness. I don't know if they are a need, but most people need refreshers. Search for Assertiveness and look for something like www.coping. Or contact me. I have a website with the links, www.askdrchuck.com. Good luck!

Depression often comes about due to feeling helpless or angry.
If you can't change your lifestyle then it may well persist. It can be kept under control with antidepressants, but unless you treat the cause of the depression then it won't go away.
Examine the reasons why you can't change your lifestyle or what it is about your current lifestyle that's bothering you. Some things in life can't be changed, but a lot can and it may just be a case of making a few small changes.
Counselling may also help.

Depression that lasts longer than 6 months is a problem that medications alone will not end,you need different meds and counseling that is supportive and addresses the issues you have, and you need to do what they suggest,If they are saying things that don't seem to be an answer to you,CHANGE THERAPISTS.I not only changed therapists I changed doctors too.
I was in a rut for 12 months, couldn't get out of the funk for anything,I didn't like what the psychiatrist would say, what the therapist would say,and wouldn't do anything they said!(OBSTINANT)
Now with new eyes, and a new hope for the future,Yes,depression can go away, but only through the actions I took and resolving the issue which left me hanging in mid air for 12 months.
Hope this helps,KB

Hi. Sorry to hear you're feeling this way. Depression can indeed go away and you can be happy and live a normal life. However, it can also come back. My advice is, read up as much as you can about it, using whatever tools you have (the internet, books etc) and when you understand it more, you're in a better position to deal with it (always).
If you're not happy with your doctor, it's your right to find someone else. You need to be satisfied with the help you're getting. Just because someone is a doctor doesn't make them always right. There are good doctors and bad doctors. I've known my share of the latter, but when I found one that worked, work closely with him or her.
Depression can also be relieved with alternative therapies like hypnosis or natural products. One thing you must be prepared to do is work at it. With proper help, plus your input, you can make such tremendous strides that you can start living life again.

*nods* -- I know how you feel.
Sometimes you're fine, hanging out with your friends and having fun, and its just normal.
Then you go home and break down and start crying, or sometimes you dont cry and just sit and stare.
Then you get up and do you your homework or cook dinner, and its just normal.
I'm not an any medication (perhaps I should be), but I live for the up moments. When you have depression, it feels like the only thing you have to live for is the up moments.
You aren't alone, and living with this for so long must hurt. But keep on living, and as they say, 'Time heals all wounds.'
It'll get better, eventually, but to quicken things maybe you should try something new. Nothing as radical as changing your lifestyle, but doing something socially might help. Join a class?
When you are around other people (the right people) you feel less alone, and trust me, alone is the hardest way to live with this.

Over the last five years I had begun to have increasingly withdraw into a downward spiral of depression..
But now with the method I can fully focus my energy and thoughts into a decisive line on how to make my life better constantly. And it works like magic! I'm beginning to attract people to me once again and things have just been looking up since then.
Helping you eliminate depression?

Maybe it has something to do with what happened between you and your mom. that's a pretty dramatic experience. You should continue going to counseling or try medication. that should ease your depression. it works for a lot of people. sorry this is as good of an answer i can give. I'm not sure what to say.
