If they decide to overstay it they'd be illegal but at least they wouldn't die in the desert plus it's a lot cheaper than paying a coyote. duh.

I doubt that anyone who qualifies for a tourist visa is going to be interested in crossing any border illegally. They probably 1) have enough money to buy a return ticket and pay their expenses and 2) have a decent job in their home country and not want to move. They also may have qualifications and skills for a working visa in the US and be able to stay legally.

Illegal immigration occurs because of lack of opportunity, involving people who cannot gain access any other way. Why else would they break the laws of the US and possibly their own country?

Because they need proof that they can provide for themselves even if they do apply for a short tourist visa. Paying a coyote is a one off, whilst applying for a visa requires the visas fees as well as having proof of something of monetary value such as land or a well to do job in which most of those those who crosses the border illegally not have, hence crossing the border in the hope of getting a slightly better job.

Most of the illegals have already tried for a tourist visa. Most have been rejected. The thing that drives me insane is that they have the several thousand dollars it takes to pay a Coyote. Why not just stay home and use that money to live on since the cost of living in Mexico is about $50 - $150 a month when you get away from the tourist towns.

I was a Border Patrol Agent in the mid 90s. Most of the people I arrested never even considered going to the consulate and none would have gotten visas if they had. The rich get visas, the poor jump the fence.

They would rather pay a coyote to get them across than to apply legally. Also, the majority of illegal criminal aliens would not pass the criminal or health exam necessary.

If you are desperate to leave poverty behind. You dont have a decent place to live or food for your family, you see another country and imagine how lucky they are. You know you do not have the means or the education you need to be immigrated what do you do? I know what I would do. I would take the risk come to the country and work under the table. I know all about the pros and cons but I know I love my children I know I would love my spouse and I know the neighbouring country maybe is the answer to our happiness. We are desperate and we run.

true. they cross illegally because they have been brain washed into thinking this is their land. we stole it from mexico. we really did pay for it after we kicked some butt. but any way, all the land the united states govt claims belongs to the united states rightfully. and we are still paying for it. i would really hate to go to another country illegally knowing I'm not wanted.

Their tourist visa applications would probably be rejected. They may have already tried. It's not too easy for a low income Mexican to get a tourist visa.
